Family of injured Giants fan asks for civility - (LA Dodger game beating)
LA Times ^ | April 5, 2011 | Richard Winton

The family of Giants fan Bryan Stow issued a call for civility among rival sports fans and asked people to help catch the two suspects.

At a news conference Tuesday outside County-USC Medical Center, where Stow remains in a coma due to a brain injury he sustained during a beating at the Dodger Stadium parking lot on opening day, the family thanked the public for their support and prayers. Stow is a father of two and a paramedic who made a road trip from Santa Cruz to attend the game.

Stow's doctors also updated his condition, noting that even without sedation, he would be in a coma. They described his injuries as a severely fractured skull, which led to damage to both frontal lobes. Doctors removed the left side of his skull to allow his swollen brain to decompress.

"It's going to be a long recovery process," said Dr. Gabriel Zada, a neurologist who is treating Stow.

Bryan Stow's sister, Erin Collins, also thanked the people of Los Angeles for their support. "We know they weren't true Dodger fans," she said of the suspects.

Detectives also said they believe at least 100 people may have witnessed the attack. They and family members asked witnesses to come forward. Det. Jose Carrillo said he believes the two suspects may have assaulted three or four young men before beating Stow. The beating occurred in Parking Lot 2 at Dodger Stadium on Thursday night about 8:30 p.m. after the season opener while Stow was walking toward the taxi area.

The Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to offer a $50,000 reward for tips leading to the arrest of the suspects. The total reward is now $100,000.

As unfortunate as this situation is, I don't expect too any "snitches" to come forward...

The civility train has left the station. Next stop, marxism.

“We know they weren’t true Dodger fans,”

Raider fans?

Very restrained of them; personally, I’d be asking that they be strung up by their n*ts. For a start.

You are correct, I was in LA last week, it has moved into the lowest, most hopeless city I have ever seen, outside of places like Detroit and Oakland.

Downtown is a third-world country and so is 80% of the Valley.

Dodger Stadium is off the 110 Freeway north of downtown and probably has 50% illegal aliens and most young men are in gangs. It’s an absolute no-go zone.

In Pasadena last year at the Rose Bowl someone got stabbed by another person just here to work.

The Liberals brought this into the US with a lot of complicit Graham/McCain types, it is killing CA and the nation.

Sad situation, praying for him and his family.

I don’t mean for my following comments to be a smear against all Dodger fans, there are just a few rotten eggs who are spoiling it for many, the Dodger organization included.

As a fan of a rival team that has beaten the Dodgers in the playoffs the past few years, I won’t ever attend a Dodger game at Chavez Ravine. Coming on the heels of the events of the past few years. A couple of years ago, a guy was stabbed and now this.

It’s unfortunate because I attended a few games in the mid to late ‘90s and the atmosphere was much different than now. Friendly ribbing and chatting about baseball, then.

Not saying this is reserved solely for the Dodgers, there are problems in stadiums across the country. And until the teams get serious about it and do something, count me out.

I won’t endanger mine or my family’s life because some thug who has no comprehension of civililty may do the same to one or all of us.

If I managed any sort of public venue, be it Dodger Stadium or a corner market, I’d install inexpensive surveillance cameras — some conspicuously visible, some not — all over the place, sending images cheaply to a remote server. This once would have been prohibitively expensive, but these days it’s cheap ... cheaper than higher liability insurance. (Of course, if your venue IS big and lucrative, you’d spring for slightly better cameras, etc.)

I’m thinking of this because, Just Damn, wouldn’t it be great to have some nice pictures of these two animals at Dodger Stadium? And of their getaway car, with a good image of its license plate?

Prayers for the poor victim of this senseless attack.

This is bad, and reminds me of the white truck driver beaten by black thugs during the post-Rodney King riots, who suffered permanent brain damage. Finally, some brave citizens stepped in to help him.

In this case, the witnesses did not step in and are not even speaking out afterward. Does this mean they support the Giants fans being beaten? Or anyone who fits a Giants fan “profile?”

Believe me, the racial aspects of this will NOT be discussed publicly in this city.

You may be right about the racial aspects, but consider that “southern” (California) Latino gang members, “Surenos,” profess PARTICULAR hatred for Northern California Latino gangsters, “Nortenos.” My point is that a Latino Giants fan might have been beaten even more quickly or severely. (Unimaginable ...)

It's kind of unusual to see this kind of sh!t at a sporting event these days. One of the underlying factors behind the high ticket prices in many professional sports is a desire on the part of these teams to keep animals like this away from respectable fans.

My guess is that the Los Angeles Dodgers have a stronger interest than anyone else in getting this resolved quickly. As someone who has lived in the New York City area for most of my life and grew up as a fan of the Yankees, I can tell you that one or two incidents like this can depress attendance for decades.

Mr. Stow, in fact, has dark hair and a ruddy complexion from pics I saw. Maybe they thought he was a cholo too? But, I don’t think we need to get too complex about this. The homies went to Chavez Ravine looking for some “action.”

Which pretty much explains why soccer hooliganism is virtually non-existent today in the English Premier League, it's in the lower divisions, with cheaper tickets where it continues to be somewhat of a problem.

I wonder what happened to all the cell phone cameras that seem to pop up whenever something meaningless happens and it is worldwide in minutes.

Not saying he deserved to be injured but I find it hard to believe they just singled him out for no reason at all, above all other fans. I would doubt he wasn’t a willing participant in some form and escalating the situation.

Otherwise we’d be seeing this occurring all the time to people that aren’t drunk or getting verbal and obnoxious with fans of other teams. generally this doesn’t happen to people that aren’t getting ‘into it’ with other people.

Those are valid points, but if you do a Google search on phrases like "Philadelphia fans," "scumbags," etc., you'll find a number of stories of people who were abused at sporting events in Philadelphia for no good reason at all.

This guy takes the cake for the lowest piece of sh!t in the food chain, as far as I'm concerned:

The act was totally sick, but there is a moral to this incident: Do NOT wear Giants apparel to Dodger Stadium.

Dodger games to definately avoid:

Half-price food and drink, including alcoholic beverages, will also be offered on May 4, June 15, June 22, August 10 and August 31. The Dodgers will wear the throwback uniforms in each of those games.

I wasn’t aware that this was actually a specific thing going on in Philadelphia. Thanks for pointing that out.
