On the surface, TLC's "Extreme Couponing" -- premiering tonight at 9:30 p.m. EDT -- may look to you and me like an innocently voyeuristic look into the lives of fellow Americans who take penny-pinching to the extreme, saving at times hundreds of dollars on grocery store runs.
But that's why we're not TV critics for a liberal metropolitan newspaper.
Washington Post's Hank Stuever worked in a healthy share of left-wing grousing about capitalism and insisted that the coupon-clippers highlighted by the program were insufferably selfish souls.
"Little piggies go to market, and clean up on Aisle 5," the article's online headline snarked.
"Repulsion may or may not be the shows ultimate intent, but it stirs up unsettling and complex thoughts, not only about the sins of gluttony and pride, but also about the production and consumption of cheap, processed food," Stuever insisted. "Theres also something to snack on for those of us fretting over an ever-widening wealth gap amid dwindling resources."
But who are these gluttonous people? Some of them are moms of large families...

Up your alley.
He sounds like the Anti-Stossel.
OK, I have to admit they have a point. I used to belong to a couponing group here in Arizona, Coupon Sense. On their forum, many women would gloat that they, “cleaned out the shelves” of whatever product they happened to have coupons for. And it wasn’t enough to have maybe 3 or 4 coupons. They would have 15-20 or more for an item.
There were many, many times I would head to the grocery store to find that some of the best deals had already been wiped out. One evening I saw a woman with a cart overloaded with just boxes of Cheerio because of a special movie deal stamped on the back of each box. A lot of these women also buy a dozen or more Sunday newspapers so they can have that many batches of Sunday coupons, and one woman I know quite well drops by multiple Starbucks on Sundays just so she can pick up the coupon fliers.
I do think there’s a degree of greed and selfishness involved. In some cases their families were large, but in most cases, they weren’t.
Using coupons is un-patriotic now....makes dear leader look bad...
Speaking like someone who has never ever felt the pinch of not enough money.
Must be real nice to have mom and dad providing everything for their precious baby, and to be paid outrageously since his first day on his first job ever.
Behold, the true reason for the animosity emerges.
I admire the fact that they actually invest sweat equity into clipping coupons and organizing them and shopping for bargains. It is their job in many ways. The market is what the market is. If you wait until all the cookies are gone, tough luck. Do you want the prudent ones to share the wealth a la Obama???/
Hank the presstitute probably has his healthcare paid for by Barry so he’s got more $ for food.

Ah yes....The sour grapes of wrath...
If the shelves are bare...it’s because the business didnt stock them...you think their entire stock is sitting on the shelf?
What’s next?
Rationing?
Sorry mam’...you are only allowed two boxes of cereal per week...
I keep a food stock...it’s not unusual to go and drop a couple hundred bucks to restock and rotate ( I give stuff away) and leave with litterly hundreds of canned goods and dry stuffs....and I use every coupon I can find...
The money I save on food....I spend elsewhere...
“[M]y real beef, which Im selling for half-off today, is that the subjects of Extreme Couponing are never seen stopping at a food bank on the way home to share some of their largess except once, in the original Extreme Couponing special.”
It takes alot of effort to clip and organize enough coupons to get $550 worth of food for $6. Rather than celebrate these people for setting an example for the lazy poor to follow, the author gripes that they dont share the fruits of their efforts with others. No doubt this guy sees the story of the ant and the grasshopper from the grasshopper’s perspective and thinks the ant should be jailed for allowing the grasshopper to die.
Aye...
the left (and their ideological father)
hates families, especially large ones.
Another point - these “coupon moms” are “greedy”?
What of the “food stamp / EBT moms” who are buying “luxury food” on OUR DIME?
I thought coupon clipping was all about the children. Isn’t the Left all about the children?
Yet they have no problems with people using Food Stamps.
You’ll never “lose” money by buying food ahead.
It always goes up.
Just make sure your rotation plan is implemented so that you don’t waste anything.
I am guessing Hank would P/ss and moan about my grandmothers caning.
Guy sounds like a communist or maybe he is just jealous
Like all liberals, the author is not really fond of FREEDOM. There is no facet of our lives they don’t want to control. NONE. ZERO. NADA.
Just another distraction from the fascist state OweBama has forced on us all. Mind your own business Kenny.
I have nothing against the couponers except their effect on me if I’m unfortunate enough to be in the line behind them.
