Describing education and education equality as the “civil rights issue of our time,” President Obama called Wednesday for a renewed effort to eliminate the achievement gap between African-American students and others.
“Too many of our kids are dropping out of schools,” Mr. Obama told a mostly black audience in the ballroom of the Sheraton New York Hotel in Manhattan. “That’s not a white, black or brown problem. That’s everybody’s problem.”
In a lightning-fast visit to New York before returning to Washington for more budget talks, Mr. Obama delivered a sober assessment of what he has done since taking office to help black Americans, and what more needs to be done. He praised the health care overhaul and the auto-industry bailout, and castigated critics who he said had developed “amnesia” about the shape the country was in when he took office.
Mr. Obama’s remarks, at the 20th anniversary of the Rev. Al Sharpton’s Harlem-based National Action Network, kept a promise he made when he spoke to the group as a presidential candidate in 2007. Win or lose, he pledged to return, and Wednesday night he spoke to a hugely supportive audience of 1,200 primarily black Americans, who had already heard from a daylong procession of the president’s cabinet and close advisers.
The president’s appearance at the Sharpton event came two days after he announced his intention to seek a second term. The White House is keenly aware that Mr. Obama will need to tap into his base of black support in the 2012 re-election campaign.
Mr. Obama won 95 percent of the black vote in 2008. Polls have shown his approval among blacks remains high, at 84 percent, while his national approval rating is around 50 percent.

He was given special perks and privileges in his life, to include admission to a college most can't dream of attending because of his “specialness,” but he bad mouths and attacks that society that gave him all these opportunities, including being it's leader.
As a candidate in 2008 he played the opposition political game to the maximum with GITMO, Iraq, oil, energy policy, taxes.......... he bashed Bush relentlessly. At every turn, with every bad press release or story of some set back in Iraq, there stood candidate Obama ready to exploit it.
In 2008 he had no reservations backing out of McCain Feingolds campaign spending rules and he also had no issue with his surrogates slinging mud to include bringing in the children of opponents, wives............... How he talks about civility in discourse now.
As a candidate in 2008 he played the feel good political game and promised everyone everything, even contradicting himself and making absurd claims that are not even remotely feasible. Seriously, look back and do a google search. Candidate Obama was going to: make college cheaper, lower taxes on the so called middle class (whatever that definition is that day), spend more on our VETs, education, R&D, develop green energy, expand and renew our infrastructure all while he reduces our deficit. He was for and against pro-choice, for and against gun rights, for and against various subsidies. He mocked small town people that cling to things like their religion and guns but also for them.................. He created these expectations, why should anyone feel sorry for him how?
If you see tears from family, sweat on his brow, the relentless beat down that is unjustified at times, don't have any sympathy. If he had any dignity, honor and respect, if as a candidate and politician climbing the ladder had he done more than “pretend” to be a noble man with character, though on opposite ends of the political spectrum, he would deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. But this hyena deserves WORSE than he's getting, but thank's to his uniqueness and historical significance as well as the love affair Hollywood, the news and arts have with liberal ideas he's just getting a small dose. But I can't say I have any sympathy what so ever.
obambi was elected because he spoke of ending the race wars. His election would prove that discrimination was over and we could once again focus on achievement.
Now that zero has figured out that the only reason he got into the big name schools, received scholarships, received grades, etc.... was due to EEOC / affirmative action / special treatment / and white guilt. So now he is back on the demonic-rat plantation. My people be too stupid to make it on their own - so you alls must be a bunch of racists. We need equal outcomes cause equal education ain’t cutting it. The teachers be racist, the books be racist, and the tests be racist. Our brothers don’t stand a chance against all this racism.
Now the solution is easy. Remember how the Russians use to have political officers throughout society to make sure the whole country was on the same page politically. Well what we need are diversity officers everywhere to make sure that the whole country is on the same page in a diversity sense.

I usually turn off the radio or mute it the second he comes on. If I am driving, I keep both hands on the wheel, but both are giving him the one fingered salute.
My daughter busted her ass to be the top of her high school. If Obama can get all of the other students of every race to match her effort, he will be the greatest President ever!

I totally disagree. College grads are working at fast food joints because thay cannot add enough value to better employers. Many, many, many companies are looking for people with strong technical and problem-solving skills and a willingness to work hard.
And the solution, O'Genuis is what exactly?! You can't make baby mamas/daddys care whether their children get an education since they are busy making more babies to get more checks from Uncle Sugar.
Stop the checks and either the babies stop or they will have to actually W O R K to raise them. As it is now they can whip out that government credit card and buy a BIG birthday cake at Sam's for $52.99 for ONE of the sperm donor's birthday and expect the shcool to feed their kids.

My finish to the sentence: because Universities lowered the bar SO much and hand out such BS degrees in things that hardly qualify as education... that the kids are unemployable...just as unemployable as if they never went to college. The degree is completely devalued.... don't believe it?... just look at the list of study options in the college catalog.
Then why are you focusing on blacks? Not only that how do you propose 'closing the gap' without penalizing whites?
It can’t be said better than you said it. I have an MBA but my skills are mostly out of date. So, I don’t add the value they need, so I have to take a lower job. That’s life and I accept it (I’m 57, so it’s getting late in the day to refresh the skill set).

Parental support is the sine qua non of elementary/secondary education.People who want to believe that government school is as good as homeschooling must confront the fact that only involved parents voluntarily homeschool. It follows that as long at the government school must contend with any undisciplined children at all, homeschooling must be at least as good government schools. And it is far cheaper.
Even in the extreme case where a parent might come to realize that she's in over her head, at least she will have learned quite a bit in the process - which is more than can be said of some schools, apparently.
