A woman shot a man, who later died, after he walked into her Carrollton-area house Tuesday night and pulled a handgun on her and her three children, police said.
The 30-year-old woman and her three children were in their house in the 1700 block of Cambronne Street when Melvin Plummer, 21, of Marrero walked inside about 7 p.m., said officer Garry Flot, a New Orleans Police Department spokesman.
Plummer pulled a gun out, but the woman pulled out one of her own and fired at Plummer, hitting him several times. Paramedics rushed Plummer to Interim LSU Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead, said John Gagliano, the Orleans Parish coroner's office chief investigator.
The woman and her children were not injured, Flot said.
Attempts to contact Plummer's family and the woman from the Cambronne Street house were unsuccessful Wednesday.
Homicide Detective Elizabeth Garcia, who is leading the investigation, said the woman had been home a short time when Plummer walked into the house through a closed but unlocked security gate. The house's front door was open, Garcia said.
Garcia said it was still under investigation whether Plummer and the woman had any previous relationship. A motive for Plummer's entry was also under investigation Wednesday, Garcia said.
Police classified Plummer's death as a justifiable homicide, Flot said, but the Orleans Parish District Attorney's office will still review the incident.
In 2006, then-Gov. Kathleen Blanco signed into law a bill that protects from prosecution anyone who kills an intruder "who has made unlawful entry into the dwelling ... and the person committing the homicide reasonably believes that the use of deadly force is necessary to prevent the entry or to compel the intruder to leave the premises."

Melvin Plummer sterilized with extreme prejudice.
Good for her.
Bounties should be paid for eliminating violent career criminals.
Yes, I mean it.
I agree with you.
I just love a happy ending...(sniff)
Haw haw haw. Good post. That is exactly why citizens should keep and bear arms no matter what century it is.
Yup. I would like to see changes in the law that make it much easier for communities to deal with these problems. As far as I’m concerned, the police are the people who fill out paperwork after a crime happens. If a community wants to stop a crime, or prevent future crimes, then they should do it without excessive police involvement.
Not enough info to tell if the woman was being ‘rayciss’.
Heh.
"Leave the premises" - in a body bag.
This should be considered what a local talk show host called "praiseworthy homicide". Justifiable just doesn't cover it.

I agree with you.
Good day one less we have to pay room and board for.
Sorry she had to do it, but applaud her in her commitment of making her and her family her personal responsibility.
Me too, hand me the box of tissues when you're done.
He was a former rapist released from custody.
Uncle Richard says she was his best student. I question how she was able to pop him two times through the throat with a .380 while carrying a grocery bag and a baby.
Neither here nor there. He was a released rapist, and he was shot dead in her garage. She was not charged with any crime.
Manchester NH sometime in the late 80’s
I would’n even attach “homicide” as part of its definition... call it “justice served as it should be”.
I love a happy ending!
Finally a good story on crime here in New Orleans.
Excellent! Good job Mom!
More legal guns= less crime.
“A motive for Plummer’s entry was also under investigation?”
Who cares?....He wasn’t selling girl scout cookies.
Any pictures of the perp, yet?
