>> Could it have been a disgruntled local?

Probably would have been a stabbing in that case.

Agreed. They are trying to revive the anti-nuke movement that is trying to get back out of the wilderness. This Japan tragedy is just an opportunity to revive this dormant issue, just as the Tucson murders and shooting of a Congresswoman is the jump-start a revival the anti-gun movement.

My prediction: homosexual.

A homosexual with too much repressed flamboyancy.

“The arrested man was a serving member of military personnel, thought to be an armed guard working on the Astute.”

That’s why you only give Barney Fife one bullet.

Seriously, I cringe every time I drive through the gate and see the gate guards / guardettes wearing body armor, kevlar helmets and an M-9 strapped to their hips.

That article also mentions something about an armed guard being arrested? So does that mean the sailor was an MP?

Remember in “The Hunt for Red October” that too many bad things can happen when a gun goes off in a nuke sub.

No, no, no...the locals in question would be civilians, and the UK has gun control laws, so it’s impossible for anyone to be shot by a civilian.

Drive on by, nothing to see here.

Both victims are officers.

The arrested man was a serving member of military personnel, thought to be an armed guard working on the Astute (probably enlisted).

“Are there any diesel subs anymore?”

Most navies (except the USN) have diesel subs for use in coastal waters. A diesel is inherently quieter than a nuke because you can turn off all of the machinery in a diesel sub (except for the electric motors) and run silently. On a nuke you need to keeps pumps running to cool the nuke plant, and coolant circulating creates a lot of noise (relative to that of an electric motor slowly turning a propeller).

Perhaps the shooter’s subconscious was to blame.

The title makes it sound like he died BECAUSE it was a nuke sub.

The MSM does the same with car accidents - it'll be 'SUV Kills Three' but NEVER ' Prius Kills Three'. MSM bias is getting waaaaay too predictable.

Isn’t it interesting that they stress right up front that incidents like these are not terrorist related which comes right out of the FBI playbook?

The British Upholder class boats are diesel electric. As another freeper pointed out, most navies with a significant sub force have diesel subs for coastal work. Quiet and cheap.

Are the Brits allowing women on their subs already? Must be a bunch of sub racing going on these days!

I always think the term “shooting spree” makes it sound like some sort of fun recreational thing. Odd choice of words (altho I know it’s the common term).

Notice the photo of this vessels crew (posted at TheDailyMail) a few crew members sport beards. Is facial hair permited in the Royal Navy?

Probably, because most submariners have well adjusted personalities.
