Deal falls short of GOP cut pledge; 'As good as we could get,' says Boehner (We lost!)
The Hill ^ | Saturday April 9, 2011 | Bob Cusack

The bipartisan deal struck Friday falls short of the House Republican campaign pledge to cut $100 billion in fiscal 2011 spending.

The pact cuts $78.5 billion when compared to President Obama's fiscal 2011 budget request, which was never enacted.

The accord cuts $39 billion in actual spending, $22 billion less than bill the House passed in February.

In a brief interview, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) told The Hill the agreement was "as good a deal as we could get."

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), chairman of the Republican Study Committee, said he expects "significant" opposition from conservatives, both to the short-term fix and the long-term spending bill. He said he will vote against both

They could NOT break with our Military. They just couldn’t. Not with this pos in the WH. If this is a good as they could get...for now...then that is more than I expected, actually. You have to give them credit, I know you don’t want to, but the morale of guys serving is soon coming under heavy, heavy, and heavier pressure. We can’t desert them now. They have too much to deal with as it is.

You do realize Boehner got two huge riders in this deal that totally cut the Democrats off at the knees?

1) The Senate now HAS to vote on the Healthcare Bill being cut

The Senate now HAS to VOTE on cutting funding for Planned Parenthood.

“All this nonsense about Boehner being forced out or that we somehow lost is absolute hogwash.

We have now changed the terms of the debate. The country is no longer talking about whether to cut, now we talk only about how much. President Obama was forced to go on TV tonight and essentially embrace spending cuts - just months ago he was busy pushing spending increases.”

This is true.
We have President Obama now taking ‘credit’ for a budget that is the ‘largest cut in spending in history’ ... Obama drinking the Tea!!!

This is like Clinton in 1995 ‘the era of big government is over’ ... next 6 years the govt - under GOP budgets grew smaller than at any time in the previous 30 years (or the next 10 :-( ) ... so this day IS historic ...

This is not the end, but the beginning of the end of Big Government Obam-unism.

Elections matter. And this agreement has shifted the debate significantly.

We control one half of one half of the policy-making branches of government and have a certified America-hating Marxist usurper in the White House who is actively trying to bankrupt the country, and yet we still managed to get the largest budget cut in history, and that’s only for a half-year budget. Annualized the cuts are almost $80 billion. Given the circumstances, this is better than we could have hoped for, and a lot better than Gingrich ever got from Bubba. If Nancy were still speaker, we would be talking about the biggest INCREASE in history right now.

The real fight is in a month on the debt ceiling, and then in 6 months on the FY2012 budget, and then in 9 months against the leftist RINO Obamaniks for the GOP nomination. We should have always known we’d never get what we really want until we have a bone fide conservative at 1600 Penn. The fight has just begun. This is round one and we won it.

Maybe there’s a strategy here, but Boner caves too much to believe that for sure. He’s really telegraphed about not wanting a shutdown and I think that weakened his position from the get go.

When’s the last time we had a budget or CR with ACTUAL cuts in spending, not cuts vs projected increases?!

It’s not perfect. Far from it. But it’s a HUGE win.

And it mandates a Senate vote on flat-out repealing Obamacare! BIG win!

Reid looked and sounded like he wanted to cry when giving his press release. That says a lot by itself!

Cmon, Freepers and Tea Partiers. This is a HUGE sign of weakness by the demscum. Don’t cry. Don’t celebrate, either, but this was a win. Just a 30 day battle win, but a win!

Now let’s focus on winning the war!

"as good a deal as we could get."

$4 *TRILLION* dollar budget that will put OUR CHILDREN $1.5 *TRILLION* dollars deeper in debt and this is the best they could do huh?

Let's see. Someone check my math. $40 billion is what? 1/100th of the actual budget?

I have to agree with another poster in another thread today. The only way we're going to fix all this is to let it all collapse then try and put it back together as best we can after the fact.

The Pol's certainly aren't going to do anything about it. They're far too well entrenched and a significant amount of this cash is going into their pockets. What do they care? Their kids aren't going to have to pay it back. They'll be rich on all the money the current pol's have stuffed into their pockets.

Doubt that the tea party will help at all.

I didn't choose my tagline outta the blue.

The post-deal talking points from the Boehnerites in the house seem to be, "We got a pretty good deal, this is just a minor skirmish anyway, I know some of you tea party folks aren't happy, but hold your fire until the debt ceiling increase comes up next month. We're going to stick the screws to Obama and get REALLY tough!"

How come I have the feeling when this debt ceiling increase comes up next month and we go through this government shutdown deja-vu, the post cave-in talking points will be, "We managed to get a few concessions, not as much as we would have liked, But this debt ceiling increase was too important to risk the countries credit over. I know some of you tea party folks are getting a bit angry. But you just wait for the 2012 budget. We're going to stick it to Obama then and get REALLY, REALLY tough! I promise. Scouts honor.

The Dems didn’t have a budget, they punted to the Republicans. This IS a Republican budget, the biggest spending budget ever passed by any Congress.

The Senate now HAS to VOTE on cutting funding for Planned Parenthood.

lol. NEVER HAPPEN!!

If it even get's close to that they'll bring out the lefty goons just like in Wisc.

the Pro-Choice vote is one of the main pillars holding up the Democrat Party. Try and kill that or Unions and the like and they'll take to the streets and the spineless Reps will belly up. Guarantee it.

Sorry, defunding obamacare, not repealing. Functionally equivalent, though. Esp given the number of donk Senators up in ‘12. And don’t think they’re unconcerned about what happened in Wisconsin. The full force of the national leftscum machine backed the donk, and she still lost!

I guess I look at it this way. If the Republicans hadn’t taken over the House in November, we wouldn’t have had any say in the budget at all. The Dems would’ve kept spending and NO cuts would’ve been made.

It was a pretty good deal considering libs control both the Senate and presidency. Let’s take back control of those institutions in 2012. THEN we can pursue much smaller government.

We will never return to a smaller government so long as forcing Congress to reduce their powers within the confines for the enumerated powers in Article 1 Section of the Constitution is delayed until some unspecified point in the future. That mentality becomes an open ended proposition that is never closed. We don't have to to wait. Forcing Congress to comply with Article 1 Section 8 has to start now!
