Life after deportation: Young citizens left behind when Mom and Dad leave country
Chicago Tribune ^ | April 6, 2011 | Chicago Tribune

In the two years since her father was deported, 13-year-old Elisabeth and her three younger siblings have settled into an after school routine while their mother, Maria Lourdes, works long hours at a beauty salon.

The family shares a cramped bedroom in a Waukegan apartment. When school friends wonder why her father is no longer in the picture, Elisabeth has learned to change the subject

"I don't answer," she said. "It's such a long story."

After Elisabeth's father was deported, the family moved briefly to Mexico. But domestic discord led Maria Lourdes to return to Waukegan with her children, who were born here and are U.S. citizens. She, like her husband, is undocumented, but has applied for a visa to remain in the country. Now, the four children carry on in America as best as they can, just like a growing number of young people who were born in this country and have seen one or both parents deported.

Those who work with such children say they've seen an increase in the cases locally. As a result, churches, schools and advocacy groups are left scrambling to help once-stable households deal with poverty, foreclosures, academic failure and other problems that come when so-called mixed immigration status families are split up.

The separation creates an "angry generation" of children who feel traumatized and disaffected but still choose to stay in the U.S. rather than face potential poverty, violence, and cultural and language barriers abroad. For some, advocates say, life in America is all they know.

"It's a horrific situation," said Josh Hoyt, director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. "Given that we have this vastly increased number of deportations … we're trying to create infrastructure or support, specifically for people that have done nothing criminal other than come

cultural and language barriers in all fairness their parents speak spainsh, have told them all about Mexico. What I do not get is, come to the U.S. illegally, then decide to go ahead and have children knowing fully well what the outcome will be, if and when Immigration catches them. The parents created these problems not us. Nobody ever said life was fair but you cannot say because I broke the laws in coming here after which I have kids, the laws are suppose to be ignored. Chances are good said family members will return in a few weeks.)specifically for people that have done nothing criminal other than come here to work in order to work either there is fake or stolen documents involved , driving without licenses and insurance. There is more to it, then I just showed up to work. Where is Rep. Luis Gutiérrez, he has a million friends, who can take care of these kids. Seems like the supporters are few and far when it comes down to spending their own money.

The deportees are rotten people to abandon their children in a foreign country.

This isn't about deportation this is about a couple who couldn't get along. Big whoop.

and are U.S. citizens

No they're not. They just say they are.

Let's have a vote of the citizenry - the electorate - on whether illegal aliens - their parents - are the people who get to choose who will be the Americans of the future.

I know the result already.

Oh, brrruuuuuther.

There seems to be a ramp-up in these kinds of stories lately. The Commies are prepping for an amnesty-but-we-won't-call-it-amnesty vote.

But domestic discord led Maria Lourdes to return to Waukegan with her children,

Domestic discord, and that sweet, sweet EITC check she gets every year.

I came to this country with my parents legally as a child...My parents had to have strict background checks, medically screened, etc. Moreover, there had to be a “sponsor”, an American citizen who would provide for you for housing, finances, etc until you got a job or place to live. If you got sick or had financial problems, the sponsor was responsible.

We were called the slang”DP’s”! (displaced persons) and we tried to learn english as fast as we could..My family became naturalized citizens and to their dying days, my parents said and deeply felt “This is the best country on earth!!”

I can tell off any illegal immigrant...Let them say soemthing to me, I literally came off the boat!

Don't be angry, get on your knees and thank God that you are able to live in the land of the free and learn to act and vote in a way so as to keep it from turning into the place from which you fled.

"As a result, churches, schools and advocacy groups are left scrambling to help once-stable households deal with poverty, foreclosures, academic failure and other problems that come when so-called mixed immigration status (they are NOT mixed immigration status for this woman - she, too, is illegal)families are split up."

As was reported before the 2008 election, over 5 million home loans went to illegal aliens, with no proof of citizenship, job, nor bank information. Now, the U.S. government is attempting to "keep people in their homes despite foreclosure" (forcing banks and savings and loan cos. to lower interest rate, now even going in the direction of lowering original price of home (mostly no loan payments have ever been made!)

There is no such thing as allowing illegals to return because of "domestic issues" she is illegal - deport her and usher her underage children right along with her, as other families do, children live with their parents!

Bull's-eye.

We're already paying through the nose to sustain these families, why don't we put that money towards a more useful purpose?

Deportees

Secure borders would eliminate this stupid unnecessary “problem.”

But we can't have that.

Where would the Democrats get their new votes from?

Minor children don’t “decide” to stay. They were abandoned by their parents.

Give them a certificate of live birth and send them home, one of them may become president of Mexico that way. And it would be a grave injustice not to give him his/her chance.
