Life after deportation: Young citizens left behind when Mom and Dad leave country
Chicago Tribune ^ | April 6, 2011 | Chicago Tribune

In the two years since her father was deported, 13-year-old Elisabeth and her three younger siblings have settled into an after school routine while their mother, Maria Lourdes, works long hours at a beauty salon.

The family shares a cramped bedroom in a Waukegan apartment. When school friends wonder why her father is no longer in the picture, Elisabeth has learned to change the subject

"I don't answer," she said. "It's such a long story."

After Elisabeth's father was deported, the family moved briefly to Mexico. But domestic discord led Maria Lourdes to return to Waukegan with her children, who were born here and are U.S. citizens. She, like her husband, is undocumented, but has applied for a visa to remain in the country. Now, the four children carry on in America as best as they can, just like a growing number of young people who were born in this country and have seen one or both parents deported.

Those who work with such children say they've seen an increase in the cases locally. As a result, churches, schools and advocacy groups are left scrambling to help once-stable households deal with poverty, foreclosures, academic failure and other problems that come when so-called mixed immigration status families are split up.

The separation creates an "angry generation" of children who feel traumatized and disaffected but still choose to stay in the U.S. rather than face potential poverty, violence, and cultural and language barriers abroad. For some, advocates say, life in America is all they know.

"It's a horrific situation," said Josh Hoyt, director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. "Given that we have this vastly increased number of deportations … we're trying to create infrastructure or support, specifically for people that have done nothing criminal other than come

OK, you “Own” a restaurant in Baja?
Are you Irish, of do you have a Lease, not ownership?

With all the Illegals that have been deported AFTER gaining education and experience in living in a country that is NOT totally corrupt it would be reasonable to expect some of them who are NOT criminally inclined to band together and create a better society.
Even if only in a single state, maybe a few rural villages, then network those villagers and improve the whole country?

But this is not happening, the opportunity is there, the will apparently is not.

As was reported before the 2008 election, over 5 million home loans went to illegal aliens, with no proof of citizenship, job, nor bank information.

This really aggravate me on a personal level. I struggled for years to save up the 20% down payment on a modest condo in 2007. 2 years later it's barely worth what I owe on it, and these illegals want sympathy? If I went to Mexico I would be forbidden to own real estate of ANY KIND no matter how many years I lived there.

Jan 20, 2013 Can't Get Here Soon Enough!!!

Disclosure: I understand this sort of thing has been happening for years, I'm just so tired of hearing Soetoro lecturing us on, "not accepting people because they're different".

Find out where this lying, sniveling leftist pig lives and send him 10,000 illegals for free food, shelter and medical care.

You're in good company.

Crook County is not held in the highest esteem.

But domestic discord led Maria Lourdes to return to Waukegan...She, like her husband, is undocumented...

"Domestic discord?" I guess it's easier to be a baby mamma to FOUR child on Uncle Sucker's dime than in Mexico.

Your children belong with you... in MEXICO where they can see their FATHER and extended family. Or did you sneak all them in too?

She applied for a visa? It should be DENIED. You broke into the United States. You dropped one two three FOUR anchor babies over 14 years. You should not be rewarded. This is something you brought on your children. Not us. Not them. YOU. You and your 'estranged' husband.

The article seems to be saying that birthright citizenship is cruel to children. Let us end it, then.

It must annoy you to see stories of the millions of lawbreakers profiting after your family made the sacrifice taking the time and trouble to emigrate the right way.

You know, better than most, why we had the legal immigration system we did. It was above board and a fair deal.

"Immigration" now is lawless, exploitive, seedy.

FOUR children. Sloppy editing on my part.

Unfortunately there are no jobs here.

Not the US's problem. We have our own intractable unemployment to worry about. It might be "only" 9.2% nationally (Labor says) but it's a lot worse in CA and other states those Mexicans might try to relocate to first.

Mexico depends too heavily on money transferred from illegal workers in the U.S. It's an oil nation with a rich culture. Rather than worrying about trying to retake "Aztlan" and voting Democrat here, they should be reforming their own nation.

Americans are staying away because of the cartel violence as much as the economic downturn. I've not been in 20 years and won't until it's cleaned up... likely not in my lifetime.

Don't you get hassled by fedrales and bandits or is that reserved for tourists?

Heartless as I am, my reaction is that it says it all if the parents would leave the children here to fend for themselves.

Thanks for your comment.

Its not just annoying...its the anger at seeing their disrespect and now, their children’s disrespect for our country....and seeing our country as one huge Entitlement farm.

What kind of parent would leave their kids in a foreign country?

The same kind of parent who would sneak across a border like a thief in the night, then give birth, knowing what will happen to them and their little anchor brat if they get caught.

The deportees are rotten people to abandon their children in a foreign country.

Nowhere near as rotten as this scum, Josh Hoyt, who lies like the commie he is when he said,”...specifically for people that have done nothing criminal” ? ? ?

Hey there, Joshie Boy - they are “illegal” immigrants. Google “illegal”.

How many kids have to suffer when daddy, the undoucmented pharmacist, gets sent to prison? Shall we give a pass to all drug dealers with children for that reason?

This is what bothers me a few years ago I was told in court by a judge that I could not take anything I had done that was against USA laws and get anything legal out of it. No way no how no matter how I tried to twist or turn things around I could not take anything that was illegal and get anything legal out of it.
Funny thing is the Laws have not changed only the judges!
