By the end of this year, NASA will no longer be able to send humans into space. According to Barack Obama's plan, responsibility will go to private companies, which are expected to come up with cheaper ways to ferry astronauts to low-Earth orbit.
"They know they have a big step to take if they are going to put humans into space... They have a lot of work to do," says NASA Astronaut Sunita Williams.
No one can say for sure when the private American companies will come up with a new spaceship.
For years to come, it will be the Russian Soyuz spacecraft, which is going to be the only means for people to reach the International Space Station, which is perfectly fine with the leaders of Russia and the US, but does not sit well with many Americans.

I actually agree with cutting nasa. $20billion per year and they got nothing to show for it for the amount thats going into it. A private company can achieve the same thing with just $1b/year
Private enterprises will be regulated and taxed so much it will never get off the ground (pun intended), or will die a slow death.
The US should unilaterally allow US companies to own parts of the Moon. If you can get there, set up a factory, and extract resources, it’s yours. Use the profit motive. I believe there are international laws that say that you can’t own the Moon. We ought to tell them to sod off.
O privatized space but did not shut down Nasa. Now we have no Orion and still get globull warming research.

NASA, the place where it takes 1000 people and ten thousand research hours to change a light bulb. But the janitor at walmart can do it in a minute.
Maybe there is more going on behind the scenes that we don’t know about. Like national defense/security things that the leftists want to destroy.
What is the accomplished beyond bragging rights with those flights?
That is meant as a real question. I am interested in what they are doing.
So from now on, far as the USA is concerned, the path into outer space will be the John Galt Line.

Lots of shortsighted ignorance on this thread. For starters: modern communications, or satellite communications came out of the space program, as well as satellite TV and GPS systems and many technologies used by our military.
Does anyone believe those innovations and new industries would have come into being for the Western nations without the US space program? And that’s just a partial list.
From Obama’s point-of-view, he probably can’t stand for the US to lead the world in any endeavor other than apologizing for what he considers her sins against the Third World.
People can sing Kumbaya and hold hands and pretend that working with the Russians is a viable way to stay in manned space exploration, but just observing the Russians behavior around the world might not convince the more objection observers.

That would require a FOI request, and I suspect that the answers won't be forthcoming. Not for decades.
It's a sad statement for the free citizens of a Republic that we can't even know where our taxdollars are going. I understand the need for some secrecy, but there should be a ten year window. The F-111 was a twenty year old program before we knew about it.
We know of the USAF was playing around with a mini Space Shuttle for years. Ben Rich who took over from Kelly Johnson at the Skunkworks had made statements to the effect that we can "take ET back home now"...
Taken in combination with the hacked info detailing ship to ship transfers "non-terrestrial" USAF officers (meaning humans not on the planet - not bug eyed aliens) to vessels such as the U.S.S.S. Hillenkoetter and U.S.S.S Lamay, one has to figure that either there is a huge disinformation program going on, and billions upon billions of black budget money is being spent on blow and hookers, or that there is a "there" there - namely a military space program that is 50 years more advanced than anything you can imaging we have right now.

I agree that the public sector is better suited for most things. I believe that exploration, has historically/usually, been funded by governments because of the prohibitive costs and risks associated with it.
It is my belief that we need to explore and learn to live and work in space. It is very difficult to get private enterprises interested in taking up the huge costs and risks, without some groundwork (and funding) being laid from government. Once it costs and risks are reduced, the private sector can and should take over.
I do not agree that all these years of space flight were for nothing. The knowledge that we have gained from living and working in space is and will continue to be invaluable. With every day that passes we are learning more about our planet, solar system and universe. The technology that was developed in support of space exploration has been used here on earth in technology transfers.

I know that I won’t convince many folks who disagree. I just hope that these were informed decisions about the usefulness of the space program.
It is a given that many, many years down the road that the sun will go through it’s life cycle and engulf the inner planets. I think that any forward progress that we can make towards learning how to live and work in space is a step in the right direction in terms of survival of mankind.
I don’t fret about it but think we need understand that the earth is not always going to be here or be habitable. What is the saying about a long journey beginning with the first step? I would like to think that we did out part in helping to advance a step or two in either knowledge or technology towards that goal.
The new world provided tremendous benefits to the old, but they weren't lying on the beach for Columbus to pick up.
Until we are out there is a meaningful way, we won't be finding them. Unfortunately, NASA has been more of a hindrance to space commercialization than a help. They have kept a stranglehold on manned launch capabilities that has stagnated the entire industry for forty years.
