Progressives ponder why tea party is kicking their butts

By the time I finished reading this lengthy, plaintive missive by Richard Esko at the Huffington Post, I will confess that I’d actually begun feeling sorry for him. Observing the conclusion of the recent budget battles and viewing them as a disastrous loss for the progressive movement, Mr. Esko casts about for an answer to what seems to be the question of the day: How does the evil Tea Party keep kicking our butts when our ideas are so wildly popular and clearly superior? And he thinks he’s found some answers.

Once again the unpopular views of a minority have been imposed on the majority. Others will rant and rave about the Democratic leadership, and in fact that process has already begun. But progressives in this country should be asking themselves a serious question: Why does the Tea Party seem to be so much more effective than the left as a movement?

It’s a complicated question that deserves in-depth discussion, but some of the things that may be impeding progressives include excessive party loyalty, the desire for a charismatic leader (the “XFK phenomenon”), and the urge to prematurely celebrate accomplishments that are flawed and incomplete.

My head was beginning to spin just reading that last portion, but trust me… you’ll want to push on and read the rest. The first conclusion Richard reaches is one of the usual suspects. It’s all about the Benjamins.

Why did Tea Partiers win such a major victory? Money, for starters.

The liberal movement was ALWAYS a minority movement. People forget that even in it's hay-day (the 60’s and early 70’s) during the height of the civil rights movement ... the liberals were taking a BEATING at the polls.

You would think from reading history books today that liberals took to the streets by the millions and took over the country during the civil rights movement. NOTHING could be further from the truth. After all those those antiwar marches... after all the counter culture protests, the rock n roll, long hair, ect, ect.... after all that ... Nixon DESTROYED them with a 49 state sweep.

Let me repeat that, at the HEIGHT of their power, liberals got swept by supposedly the most hated man in America at the time in a FOURTY NINE (49) 4 tee 9 !!! state sweep.

Sometimes I just marvel at how stupid ‘progressives’ are.

Not yet, in liberal land everything is free, you just set around and smoke dope and the the libertarians will carry you new munchies since they support this stuff. They already have the house cleaners and yard mowing people lined up.

the Tea Party has a strong, simple and honest message that resonates with the American public: the Government spends to much, and finances too much of that spending through borrowing. It’s killing our country and needs to stop. Now.

It's a message that's hard to argue with so they attack the messengers.

Let's hope the Tea Party doesn't forget to give the GOP something to ponder too.

The nedia really downplays the fact that TEA is an acronym for Taxed Enough Already; it is a name that in and of itself would automatically rally Amercians to support it.

To stress this, people should type it out as “TEA Party”; it makes it harder to dismiss them as a racist anti-government fringe.

The growth and success of the Tea Party can be described as a reaction by the majority of Americans to the leftist lurches of a minority of Americans. The very small population-wise leftist Democrats have succeeded in imposing their will on a generally conservative America. They have succeeded because in part they have managed to convince many conservative Dems that they are getting a dirty deal by rich, conservative Republicans. The leftists have convinced these gullible and ignorant Dems that life in the U.S. has not been fair for them. They would have a lot more wealth if not for the greedy, rich Republicans. But pols like Obama, the leftist’s dream pol, have been unable to deliver the goods. Nevertheless, the leftist scheme of soaking the “rich” i.e. all Republicans remains a dream. The non-elite Dems keep swallowing the koolaid.
