Teamsters rally to fight Pa. right-to-work bill (Is the east awake???)

HARRISBURG - A Teamsters rally today drew almost 400 laborers to the Capitol, where union leaders promised to bring thousands next time if lawmakers push through anti-worker legislation.

Last week Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R-Cranberry) introduced a package of bills that would end mandatory union membership for employees of the state's schools, government and businesses.

"There is a war on workers going on in Pennsylvania, sadly," said Pennsylvania AFL-CIO secretary-treasurer Frank Snyder, also of Cranberry. "We need more jobs. We don't need legislation like this."

Others at the rally said Metcalfe's legislation would take resources away from unions and would dilute their abilities to negotiate fair wages and benefits for members.

Bill Hamilton, president of the Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters, organized the rally to get that message out.

He said conservative Republicans like Metcalfe aim to bust unions rather than to enact responsible legislation.

During a news conference last week, Metcalfe said it's unfair to force an employee to join a union and pay dues to an organization that might advocate views they disagree with.

Other right-to-work bills have been introduced in previous legislative sessions but not approved.

Twenty-two other states have adopted similar legislation.

Pennsylvania is AWAKE!

Time to control these insane public unions.

There is nothing more UNAMERICAN than forcing someone to join/pay dues to ANY group as a CONDITION of employment.

I think even some of our “working poor” are now AWAKE since they can no longer catch a bus, and the reason is finally dawning on them (all of the money went into pension for union drivers who retired at age 52)

Unlike the commie union thugs, I have to work for a living so I don’t have time to do lots of recreational drugs. I sure wish they would explain to us non-drug addicts how giving the workers the right to work without the Communists being allowed to dip into their paychecks is “anti-worker legislation”. I don’t get it.

so allowing people whether or not they wish to join a union is “anti-worker”?? betcha 99% of the people who believe this also consider themselves “pro-choice”....

One thing that can be done even before this legislation becomes law is to have school districts refuse to be the 'collection agents' for union dues. When individuals have to pay the dues themselves many are choosing not to do so. Resulting in the union threatening to sue them. Interesting....

Metcalf is a bold legislator. Pray for him.

How is enacting right to work legislation anti worker?
One of the reasons I live in Arizona is because we are a right to work state. I work for defense contractor(BAE Systems) at Yuma Army Proving Ground. YPG contracts their test services and maintenance out to TRAXX Test Services. For the last 4 years there has been an effort to unionize TRAXX. Each time it has failed miserably. The people working for TRAXX realize that unionization will kill their jobs and hurt the mission they are tasked with.

My company has phased out it’s union sites, and moved those operations to right to work states. I have had to work on programs at some of the old union sites. Getting anything done in a timely manner is next to impossible with the union clowns. I hope Pa. can pull this off.

Other right-to-work bills have been introduced in previous legislative sessions but not approved.

The difference is that after 2010 PA now has a Republican Governor (Tom Corbett) and Repubs control the state assembly(112 to 91) and senate (30 to 20).

Right to Work and Voter ID need to be at the top of the legislative agenda.

I went to work for a log cabin factory right out of high school. After I started they told me that I had to join the union within three months. There was a union “initiation” fee equal to a month’s pay and monthly dues deducted from our pay. I refused to join the union and quit.

I think these new governors of states like WI, OH, MI, and now PA, understand that the unions have killed jobs in their states.

That’s the reason we see so many CB laws being passed. Its about time.

“Union-ism” doesn’t sit well around the Cranberry area. Most of Cranberry is populated by a post-union mindset (i.e., Union’s had already destroyed their bread and butter in the greater PGH area prior to the “new” lot that has arrived). Around the Cranberry area are people who make it on their own merit and are proud of that. Add to which, MANY parents are pissed off at the local school system right now over the grading structure and are mobilizing to counter it, fomenting anti-union anything is fairly easy, I do it all the time ;)

Good for Cranberry and others areas that are coming to terms with reality. Sadly during my last visit to the Pittsburgh district, I still found a lot of people (in places like Crafton, Mt. Oliver, Etna and even Ross) still blaming President Reagan for the collapse of the steel industry.

I even had one of my relatives tell me "Unions made this town!" I logically explained to him that unions utterly destroyed the region with outmoded work rules and inflated compensation packages. He just wouldn't listen to facts.

What were they thinking when the permitted public sector unions in the first place?! People with common sense knew then that the system would eventually get out of control. It has gotten out of control nation wide!

There is no place for unions in the public sector; never has been for obvious reasons.

Frank Snyder has to know that there will be more jobs without the extra costs of public sector unions. They are part of the communist system that fails 100% of the time, crushed by economic collapse.
