CHAPEL HILL -- A UNC-Chapel Hill freshman who told police he was attacked by a man who burned his hand and called him an anti-gay slur made a false report, the university says.
In a message just released to the campus community, Chancellor Holden Thorp says: "The Department of Public Safety has determined that the alleged aggravated assault reported to campus last night did not occur. That report, filed with campus police on April 5, was false. The University will not report it as a hate crime."
"It is important to recognize that incidents of harassment do occur," Thorp continued. "When they do, we take them seriously. We strive to foster a welcoming, inclusive and safe environment at Carolina.

And no charges for filing a false police report? No attempt to at least bill the perp for wasted police time?
The law doesn’t apply to official minorities and sodomites.
The “first” would be if they actually charged one of these idiots with making a false report.
So are they going to prosecute the person that made the phony call?
It was a hate crime against heteros. They should charge him with that.
Surprise, surprise, surprise.
Isn’t it a hate crime to falsely accuse someone of a hate crime?
There was a case a few years at Claremont College north of Los Angeles where this lesbian prof claimed that her car was keyed due to her persuasion. FALSE! Security cams showed her doing the act. She was charged and found guilty of filing a false report. Her initial report caused quite an uproar, all kinds of demostrations.
Claremont Hate Crime Called Hoax
LA Times (FR thread) | March 17. 2004 | Joy Buchanan, Kristina Sauerwein and Stuart Silverstein
A week after a reported campus hate crime drew national attention, sparked protests and shut down the prestigious Claremont Colleges, police on Wednesday called the incident a hoax staged by a professor who slashed tires, shattered windows and spray-painted racist graffiti on her own car.
Claremont McKenna College psychology professor Kerri Dunn, who had told police that her car was vandalized as she spoke at a March 9 forum on racism, was identified by two eyewitnesses as the person who damaged the auto, authorities said Wednesday.
Professor Kerri Dunn vandalized her own car and then led "Stop The Hate" rallies on campus.
