Obama to call for 'balanced approach' to spending cuts (seeks to reframe the budget debate)

President Obama, seeking to reframe the debate after a budget battle driven by spending cuts, will call for a “balanced approach” to reducing the nation’s debt and deficits in a speech in Washington on Wednesday.

As the Republican-controlled House prepares to vote on both the 2011 budget compromise and its own austere 2012 proposal, which calls for major changes to entitlement programs, Obama will set out his own commitment to deficit reduction while pledging to maintain investments he says are needed to keep the economy strong.

“The president will make clear that while we all share the goal of reducing our deficit and putting our nation back on a fiscally responsible path, his vision is one where we can live within our means without putting burdens on the middle class and seniors or impeding our ability to invest in our future,” a White House official said in previewing the speech, ..

It is unclear just how specific the president's speech will be. The official described four broad steps guiding Obama’s approach: keeping domestic spending low, trimming the defense budget, reducing excess healthcare spending “while strengthening Medicare and Medicaid,” and reforming the tax code.

The latter two points will be the biggest dividing lines between the president and Republicans. The 2012 proposal offered by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), chairman of the House Budget Committee, eventually seeks to privatize Medicare and hand Medicaid over to states. ..

...

A new Gallup poll released Wednesday found that 62% of Americans supported the budget agreement reached late Friday and that a majority viewed it as a victory for neither party. Looking ahead, 59% of Americans say they would support raising taxes for families with incomes of $250,000 or more, while 37% would oppose it.

FUBAR and more FUBAR.

Mr. Obama can’t count, and his god is government programs that do not work.

What a deal for us.

“reducing excess healthcare spending “while strengthening Medicare and Medicaid,””

He supposedly already did this when he took $500 billion Medicare spending and applied it to Obamacare. We know he didn't really do it but why isn't the MSM questioning him on the double counting and lying through his teeth?

What is an acceptable deficit Barry? Give us a specific number. So far you have been arguing that $1.6 trillion is about right.

And THEN in Obamacare, what does IT do? Push more people back into Medicare.

He’ll crow that the $38 billion cut that he negotiated with the Republicans was “difficult”, but a start.

>> don’t touch entitlements.

Not exactly. Cutting entitlements like SS and Medicare is okay with Bambi, but only for middle- and upper-class whites. :-)

every GOP member of Congress needs to go and ask George H.W. Bush what happened the last time HE was persuaded to take a “balanced approach”

Too bad “balanced” doesn’t really mean balanced.

Fine, tax the hell out of them...... and brace for catastrophic layoffs, lower wages and high prices for just about everything.

There is no balance between slavery and freedom. Either we are Americans, free men, women, and children who are responsible for our own success or failure, or we are communists, recreating all the conditions of the Soviet Union, Nazi, Germany, Castro’s Cuba, and the Khmer Rouge Cambodia depending on our flavor preference but in any case people who exist to serve the state and live or die at the state’s whim. Obama knows where he wants to take us, and he’ll take the fastest road we will tolerate. My vote: shut his “balance” down and go for constitutional government - enumerated powers and nothing else.

Will Obama’s “balanced approach” deal with the massive amounts of corporate welfare (along with carve outs, subsidies and so on) that is doled out each yea -, with most of it now ending up with corporations that have aligned themselves with Obama’s agenda? Don't count on it.

John Stossel has done an excellent job of warning America about how much goes out in corporate welfare each year. Corporate welfare, along with social welfare spending, both need to be slashed.

Obama was so bad when it came to corporate welfare, that HuffPo dubbed him the “king” of corporate welfare in 2009 in an online article entitled “Barack Obama: The King Of Corporate Welfare.”

Obama has actually gotten worse since then when it comes to corporate welfare handouts, subsidies, carve outs and so on. He is actually worse than RINOS when it comes to corporate welfare - believe it or not.

This is the second budget that he has submitted, the first was a highly larded up one. We don’t hear much about that now do we? This guy is all over the map, he has no credibility.

“O” is a completely uneducated and spineless half-wit. I do believe that he regurgitates whatever his creatures shove under his nose.

The guy is wholly without any core values, knowledge or convictions. If there is a more unprincipled, malleable and gutless creature on earth it can only be a jellyfish. As a matter of fact, I think a jellyfish at least can follow a current.
