How Free Israel Prospers As Islam Remains In Dark

Last in a series from a Middle East observer who just returned from the region and whose January report for IBD was "A Restive Egypt Faces Succession," nearly two weeks before the revolt began in that country that toppled President Hosni Mubarak.

Israel, a New Jersey-sized nation of 7.5 million people (1.7 million of whom are Arab) filed 7,082 international patents in the five years ending in 2007. By contrast, 28 majority-Muslim nations with almost 1.2 billion people — 155 times the population of Israel — were granted 2,071 patents in the same period.

Narrowing the comparison to the 17 Muslim nations of the Middle East from Morocco to Iran and down the Arabian Peninsula, the 409 million people in that region generated 680 patents in five years.

This means that the Arab and Iranian world produced about one patent per year for every 3 million people, compared with Israel's output of one annual patent for every 5,295 people, an Israeli rate some 568 times that of Israel's neighbors and sometime enemies.

The awarding of Nobel Prizes in the quantitative areas of chemistry, economics and physics shows a similar disparity, with five Israeli winners compared with one French Algerian (a Jew who earned the prize for work done in France) and an Egyptian-American (for work done at Caltech in California).

This phenomenon is manifested in other nations as well, where bad government begets poverty. Free South Korea, with 48.8 million people, filed 24,200 international patents from 2003 to 2007. The 24.5 million people in the North Korean slave state managed to produce 14 patents in the same period.

In the first half of the 20th century, Jews emigrated to the Middle East to form their kibbutz communities. They bought tracts of land from the Arabs, who sold them useless swamps at exorbitant prices. The Muslims would sit on the hills laughing at the "stupid" jews as they worked the land. What did the jews do? They imported special trees which sucked up the water from the swamps, and, over time, drained them into arable farmland, which they then used to plant crops.

How did the Muslims react? They cursed the Jews for insulting them.

That was a great book. Don’t know how I missed reading it for so many years...I learned a lot from it as Uris always writes (wrote) fact based stories. It was good enough to read a second time.

Pervez Musharraf, who was an astonishingly astute critic of Islam when he headed Pakistan, pointed out several times that many muslims had won Nobel prizes in the science, but all of them did so while working in universities in the West, none did so while working in a University in the Islamic world.

The book proves it. While in Jaffa, al-Qawuqji’s men search for and discover the family’s women, whom they summarily gang-rape. Ishmael witnesses the rape of his mother, stepmother, and sister-in-law. Ibrahim brutally takes the life of his daughter, Nada, after she dishonors him by cursing him and telling him that she is no longer a virgin, the biggest possible disgrace to an Arab father. Ishmael becomes crazy after this, and “talks his father to death.” (Ibrahim dies of a heart attack after his son graphically informs him of the gang rape in Jaffa.) The novel ends with Ishmael going insane and becoming delusional. Basically its arabs doing what arabs do: rape and murder!

But seriously, 2,071 patents for suicide-vest-related stuff shows real powers of innovation.
