Maybe we can call this Generation U for unemployed. Three decades ago, the US experienced a dramatic shift in culture and economics as women entered the workforce in record numbers, and our economy expanded to meet the labor supply. As USA Today reports, we have now returned to the same working percentage of the population as we had at the beginning of the expansion, an astonishing decline that doesnt appear to be slowing much:
The share of the population that is working fell to its lowest level last year since women started entering the workforce in large numbers three decades ago, a USA TODAY analysis finds.
Only 45.4% of Americans had jobs in 2010, the lowest rate since 1983 and down from a peak of 49.3% in 2000. Last year, just 66.8% of men had jobs, the lowest on record.
The bad economy, an aging population and a plateau in women working are contributing to changes that pose serious challenges for financing the nations social programs.
There are two pressures on the structure of the social programs, both at crisis stages. The first is the rising number of those eligible for benefits. When programs like Social Security and Medicare first began, most Americans werent expected to live long enough to draw benefits for more than a couple of years.

The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Why work? The ObamaNation rewards the slugs and do nothings with “free” benefits and entitlements, so stay home, do drugs, get drunk, smack those noisy kids and eat off of that credit card that replaced food stamps. Expect the free lunch to continue as isn’t that what Omama said on the TV?
For those of us driven to work and take care of our families due to some genetic defect, we complain, but don’t act, so the only change we get is what the teen gives us back at Taco Bell.
Someone tell me I’m wrong as I am getting a little down these days.
bflr
But we still have 30 million illegals and their 6 kids each families.....migratory labor no longer migrates. They have us paying for their food, medicine, schooling, incarceration etc....
When you add that to the fact that they are more likely to watch TV all day and vote for Democrats, well, hey, I think you're getting the picture...
By eliminating millions of people from the work force, the percentage of unemployed goes down...very handy for the Obama administration.
I guess the main benefit to working is that you dont have to live in as dangerous a neighborhood and you have less of a chance of hearing garbage that passes as music 24 hours a day.
If youre a person who counts intangibles such as the fact that you arent on the Feds plantation, pride and a modicum of self-sufficiency, then you have that going for you.
Lets send back the illegal aliens. That will make the unemployment figure go down in a positive way!
Rush was just talking about this. USA Today asks “with so few wage earners, how will we pay for our social programs?” SHHEEEEESH!
More and more people are going to have to work for themselves.
Some people may think this is race-based but it isn't. In my county the overwhelming number of them are white brood heifers and it is now THE way of life for them. They learned it from their mammas, they're teaching it to their children.
Yes, but how? I have sold insurance for more than two decades and the new insurance legislation is killing me. My wife has a small clothing manufacturing business and the economy has virtually destroyed her.
What small business can possible do well in the current business climate? Most of the people I knew in the financial services business are getting killed or have gone to work for others. The small retail clothing stores my wife sells to have largely gone out of business or vastly reduced in size. The private sector is taking it up the (you-know-what) right now.
Everyone is working harder and getting paid less- or not at all.
Why must you demean Michelle's physical conditioning plan?
If the peasants have to work harder to pay for everybody, they will be in better shape
/sarc!!!!
--and he was saying the same number we're getting from hotair.com, that only "45.4% of Americans had jobs in 2010" --Rush said the number came from the Labor Dept.
Only it didn't.
The BLS puts the current employment/population ratio at 58.5. Granted they're talking about a % of the 'over 16 non-institutional' population, but that still doesn't explain the source of the 45.4% everyone's bouncing around.
