Millstone owner threatens shutdown if taxed (CT's last nuclear plant)

HARTFORD — Dominion Energy officials said Wednesday they would spend “tens of millions of dollars” shutting down the Millstone Nuclear Power Plant the company owns in Waterford if Connecticut lawmakers impose a tax on electricity generators that would cost the utility $320 million a year.

Officials with the Virginia company acknowledged there are other possible alternatives besides closing the plant, including a court challenge of the generation tax if it becomes law.

But they insisted the company is not bluffing with its threat to close the plant and that a shutdown would cost the state $1.2 billion in both direct and indirect economic benefit.

“We believe that, by even discussing, the legislature is doing damage to the state’s reputation as a place to do business,” Daniel Weekly, Dominion’s vice president of government affairs said following a press conference at the Legislative Office Building that included lawmakers from southeastern Connecticut who are opposed to the plan.

A pair of Democratic lawmakers from Waterford, State Rep. Betsy Ritter and State Sen. Andrea Stillman, said the proposed legislation that would tax power generators, SB 1176, would deal Connecticut’s economy a major setback it can’t afford during tough economic times.

The bill “has the damaging effect of putting our state in one corner and one single corporate entity in the opposite corner, ahead of what promises to be a bruising, knockdown showdown between the two,” Stillman said.

But Dominion’s threat to shut down Millstone doesn’t sit well with Connecticut’s Consumer Counsel Mary Healey.

“I don’t like brinkmanship where citizens and ratepayers are concerned,” Healey said, adding it is highly unlikely that Dominion would walk away from tens of millions of dollars in payments that the company will receive annually for providing up to 2,100 megawatts of power into the New England power grid on a daily basis.

But yet...

Conn. consumer counsel opposes Yankee Gas request for rate increase

It seems the only entity allowed to raise rates is the state!

Damn, these people need to read “Atlas Shrugged”, or maybe they did and that is their plan book.

I’m just waiting for the “Anti-Dog Eat Dog” policy.

Imposing taxes on energy producers is just another stealth tax on the consumer

They would just increase the cost per kwh

Govt types have no idea how wealth is generated... people should realize this and strap them into straight jackets with gags while we try to fix the mess they created

Oh yea... and along the way to fixing the mess... wealth gained by politicians and their staff in excess of the national yearly average should be confiscated. govt is not supposed to be about making money (by fleecing the citizens)

It's not that they don't know. It's that they don't care.

North East Utilities had Millstone 1 & 2, Vermont Yankee and Rowe if my memory is correct. Connecticut had Combustion Engineering, that made the Millstone Vessels and well as the design. Now that has been sold 2 or 3 times over, the US lost one of its top Reactor Design Firms, and all the jobs but more important, how to make the Vessel. I knew some of the engrs, in the early 90's they were working on a standard design real safe, system 1000 or something was the name of it, but post Jane Fonda they labored in futility. For the sake of argument, don't get me wrong, "CE" was not perfect, they did some things with their pension that got them sued.

With that all said, look what has become of Connecticut and the North East. They lost engineering expertise and their Southern Manufacturing capability.

Do you blame Dominion if they pull a Galt with all they and their predecessors went through with headwinds @ the state and federal level?

There are Government entities, the Department of Justice comes to mind, that is so politicized it should be shut down and its employees furloughed. There are states, Mass, California and Connecticut come to mind, that are so irrationally administered that they should be kicked out of the union. There are other states, Louisiana, Kentucky and Illinois come to mind, that are so corrupt that they too should be expelled from the union. Then there are cities, Oakland, Detroit, Philly, come to mind.... You get my drift. This nation is a mess.

Stay away! We are spinning around the toilet bowl right now.

This is just one of the more stupid ideas I’ve heard coming out of the super-majority Dems with their Dem governor.

Shut the sumbitch down, Dominion Energy! If the Connecticut Yankees are so ignorant as to tax their own power source, they DESERVE rolling blackouts!

Nice to see, but all too rare. It looks like the people that run this power plant are Tea Party types, not afraid to SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER.
