Walter Breunings earliest memories stretched back 111 years, before home entertainment came with a twist of the radio dial. They were of his grandfathers tales of killing Southerners in the Civil War.
Breuning was 3 and horrified: "I thought that was a hell of a thing to say."
But the stories stuck, becoming the first building blocks into what would develop into a deceptively simple philosophy that Breuning, the worlds oldest man at 114 before he died Thursday, credited to his longevity.
Breuning died of natural causes in a Great Falls hospital where he had been a patient for much of April with an undisclosed illness, said Stacia Kirby, spokeswoman for the Rainbow Senior Living retirement home where Breuning lived.
He was the oldest man in the world and the second-oldest person, according to the Los Angeles-based Gerontology Research Group. Besse Cooper of Monroe, Ga. born 26 days earlier is the worlds oldest person.

As old as my grandfather would’ve been this year. RIP.
The world's oldest man kicked off again?
It's got to be the world's most dangerous gig.
He’s in amazing shape for 113 years old in the video. Still very sharp and on no medications. Says he can remember when McKinley was shot. Signed up to serve in WWII but was too old.
Just Dayum.
For being the oldest of a pool of 6 billion, this really isn’t that old.....
All the hype about longevity tonics, etc....this life is strictly bounded and not that long....better focus on the next.
His father fought in the Civil War. Wow.
Sad day. The world is left without the oldest man in the world. It might take a hundred years before we get another one.
No one gets out of that gig alive!
The world has certainly changed during his lifetime. When he was born, the University of Southern California football team was playing opponents such as Los Angeles High School, Pomona College, and Chaffey College. It had yet to play a team from outside Southern California, let alone out of state.
Yeah, and the waiting list is like 114 years.
There cannot be too many people born in the nineteenth century left, can there?
Someone must be targeting old people, way too many are dying for it to be a coincidence.
Btw, does anyone remember him when he was born?
Does he has have a live birth certificate ?
:)
I have my application in, and will be trying my best to land this job. Won’t know if I will get it for another 54 years.
Tuff title to hold for any length of time. There's always someone in the wings, waiting to take your title.
"I could have been a contender".
what got me is he’d lived at a senior assisted living center...for 32 years! God Bless Him.
He was 3 years old when Wyatt Earp's younger brother was killed in a gunfight and the Apache's were still raiding ranches in Arizona.
