RALEIGH, North Carolina (Reuters) – Three days of violent storms and tornadoes across the southern United States killed at least 43 people, wrecked hundreds of buildings and downed power lines, officials said on Sunday.

North Carolina accounted for the bulk of casualties and property losses, with 22 people killed and more than 80 others injured in a string of tornadoes that ripped through the state Saturday night.

Houses were flattened, cars and trucks tossed like matchsticks and planes blown off the tarmac at a local airport. Uprooted trees, poles and debris snapped power lines, cutting electricity to more than 200,000 people in North Carolina.

A store manager for home improvement chain Lowe's in Sanford, North Carolina, was credited for saving customers and staff when she directed them to the back of the store just before a tornado peeled its roof off, news media reported.

"I've seen a lot of damage in North Carolina over the years, but this is the most catastrophic I have ever seen. The destruction is massive," North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue told CBS News after touring the worst hit areas of the state.

"We have 23 counties that are really really hurt badly, lots of tremendous property damage, schools lost, infrastructure damage," said Perdue. She said President Barack Obama had pledged "whatever it takes to rebuild North Carolina."

Where’s Obama on this?

Bush was lampooned for not getting to New Orleans quickly enough after Katrina. Then, the liberals lampooned him for going to Virginia Tech the day after the shooting there, questioning why he went there the day after, but not New Orleans right after Katrina.

So, does a president have a responsibility to go quickly to natural disasters and survey the damage? I hear Obama played golf yesterday. Where is he on this?

Don’t get me wrong, I love this state like no other, but we have our share of scum bags. I recall after Fran in ‘96, we had guys running around charging elderly homeowners upwards of $15-$20,000 to cut trees off their roofs.

I heard one of the reasons for the relative lack of looting was the police were out all night patrolling neighborhoods. Apparently they were even reminding homeowners that it’s perfectly legal to shoot someone breaking into your house.

I don’t know how the myth that Tennessee didn’t get any Federal (FEMA) help got started. The fact is that not only did FEMA stay and conduct disaster assistance operations in 46 counties, they extended their assistance past the date when it was set to expire.

By June 20, 2010, 63,633 people in Tennessee had registered for individual assistance from FEMA and FEMA had approved $141 million in aid to individual households. This does not include the millions of additional dollars in block aid given to Tennessee municipalities.
