Britons shot in Florida killed as part of 'gang initiation'

Two British friends shot dead on a crime-ridden American housing estate were ambushed and murdered, possibly as part of a gang initiation.

James Cooper, 25, and James Kouzaris, 24, were in Florida when they were killed at 3am in a gangland area rarely visited by tourists.

They apparently accepted a lift from someone they met in a bar, thinking they were being driven home.

A 16 year-old, named locally as Shawn Tyson, was charged with their murder. It emerged yesterday that he was freed by a judge last week despite being arrested over an armed robbery.

The bodies of Mr Cooper, a tennis coach who once played Andy Murray, and Mr Kouzaris were found riddled with bullets on a one-way street in the estate, known for drug dealing and gang activity.

I remember that robbery and killing spree involving foreign tourists. The governor of Florida at the time (I think it was Lawton Chiles) pulled out all the stops and had every state employee who remotely resembled a law enforcement officer out on patrol on the state's highways. A friend of mine who was a game warden was assigned a regular shift at a rest area on one of the interstates.

I had another friend in high school who was traveling to Germany on a school trip, and the kids were all advised not to wear any clothing with references to Florida (e.g., apparel from the Tampa Bay Bucs, Miami Dolphins, Florida State, University of Miami, etc.) -- for fear of retribution by German 'yutes.

What a tragedy.

As an aside, I have been to Florida many times (though not for 20+ years), in many different cities. When I heard of this, it made me think of the other tourist killings there like it was yesterday. I think of no other place in the US this way, though big cities are a danger to all...

Yeah, but I was specifically thinking of the cases of European tourists who took wrong turns in FL, and ended up dead, which were international news events.

Really ? Do you think they were striking a conscious blow for racial harmony and that’s what got them into trouble ?

Perhaps they were just taking up the offer of a lift home from a bar. Bad judgement, but then alcohol probably doesn’t improve your decision making either.

In the UK a housing estate is just where a developer or group of developers comes along and builds a lot of houses in the same place at the same time. Doesn’t have to be anything to do with the government, and normally are privately owned. Some were built by the state / local government a long time ago....

As opposed to the way houses got built until the 20th century, which were more often individual people building individual houses.

Your key word was “conscious.” They were not striking blows for anything. But the lamestream media had not presented them with an accurate picture of reality, so they presumed good motives on feral predataors. Treadwell played with brown bears and gotten eaten, we all called him a fool. We all knew grizzlies were dangerous, and not to play with them. But the MSM presents reality in a dangerously skewed manner when it addresses race. It teaches a generation that grizzlies are warm and fuzzy teddy bears to cuddle. So to speak. It left these two Brits without the defense of accurate knowledge about certain urban risks, such as taking a ride with feral predators.
