Irena Sendler was a 29-year-old social worker when the Nazis walled the Jewish quarter of her beloved Warsaw. The occupiers ruthlessly exacerbated the suffering in the ghetto by forbidding Poles from helping Jews.
Sendler originally smuggled food and medicine into the ghetto, but changed tactics once she saw that the Nazis aim wasnt humiliation but annihilation.
Very quickly we realized that the only way to save the children was to get them out, she recalled.
Sendler and her cohorts began smuggling Jewish babies and adolescents from the ghetto with their parents blessing. The women acclimated the kids to non-Jewish homes before hiding them under Catholic names in dozens of convents and private residences.
Sendler continued her efforts even after the Warsaw Ghetto was destroyed, ultimately saving around 3,000 Jews altogether. She was especially careful about recording the original and adopted names and other details that would allow for the reunion of the children with their parents after the war.

Al Gore won for doing a slide show on Global Warming
Anna Paquin played her in an HBO TV movie. She lived quite a life.
Irena was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.... She LOST. Al Gore won for doing a slide show on Global Warming
It's all right, God didn't forget her.
And God's not forgetting Al, either.
Humility is a virtue that is never recognized for what it is which is why it is what it is.
I met some Shindler Jews at a party at a friend's house once. They were his wife's parents. Their first story was about how Shindler saved them ~ I think later on that evening we got around to some of the other stuff.
Typical of the Norwegians to pass over this lady ~ too Catholic or something ~ or maybe too friendly with Jews.
I'm sure they have an excuse ~ not one I can think up ~ but there'll be something.
This award has certainly lost whatever luster it held.
What’d you expect? They couldn’t use Irena to rob the world’s taxpayers of $Trillions. Therefore, she didn’t deserve the prize.
What a joke.
Every time I read about this heroic woman’s story I am humbled and awed.
And every time I read about that piece of human offal and detritus from the political sewer, Al Gore beating her out for that Nobel Prize, I want to vomit.
Like the U.N., the Nobel Prize has become a worthless symbol of contemporary western degeneracy.
Another jewel: Irene Gut Opdyke. Her story will be with me forever. (’In My Hands’). A true heroine!
I hope I never have to be this brave, but if push comes to shove, I sure hope I can be!
Tookie Williams was actually considered, for a children's book he wrote while in prison.
Evil is as evil does..
If youd like to be on or off, please FR mail me.
I’m sure Irena will have INFINITELY greater rewards than Al Gore....FOREVER!
