It doesn't get much more clear cut than this. Republicans have asked Democrats to draw a bi-partisan map together in public. Democrats have refused and instead are rushing to push their map drawn by shady Democrat operatives behind closed doors into a bill that will never pass.
They are looking to continue the childish games of one-upsmanship, even after newspapers across the state (including the Boulder Daily Camera!) have chastised them for their games.
After Republicans practically begged Democrats to stop their games and start drawing together, Democrats decided to pull the plug, with Senator Rollie "Mr Burns" Heath issuing a press release basically ending any hopes of bipartisan compromise in the committee.
It is now becoming more clear than ever that the bipartisan committee commissioned to travel the state seeking public input on the map and draw one together was just a political tool for Democrats. They wanted political cover to claim bipartisanship when their real goal was to send this map to the courts all along. Knowing that the Supreme Court is stacked with Democrat appointees, the Dems never really planned on engaging in an honest manner from the get-go.

Much like with GWB, the Colorado Republican Party was destroyed, and I believe deliberately, by pansy assed Republican governor Bill Owens.

They want to throw it into the Colorado Supreme Court, which is filled with people who would rather spit on the Constitution than read it.
An analogous situation happened here, in CA. A “movement” or an “initiative” (for want of better words) began maybe 2 years ago, in response to the blatant gerrymandering of CA districts that had produced an only slightly embarassing 53 out of 54 perma-Dem districts. This originated in the early 90’s when Dan Burton headed the CA legislature and the Dem majority sought to permanently enshrine itself. It absolutely worked.
The Potemkin-village effort to carry out this task, visible on http://wedrawthelines.ca.gov , became a slow-motion ballot-stuffing effort of entirely predictable and cynical dimensions. My brother applied for a spot on this board. He is a retired attorney, a realtor, a licensed general contractor, sits as a judge in certain real estate litigations, and in general has lived and worked exclusively in No. CA for 40 years. The application process for becoming a member of the “redrawing” committee involved writing half a dozen essays and full financial disclosures.
Midway through the process, it became evident to him that because he expressed the general view that CA had at one time been a near-paradise, with the best roads, topnotch schools, and a vibrant economy that offered all manner of opportunity and spawned all manner of innovation and was no longer that kind of place, his application became sidelined. One of his themes was that the gradual hardening of the gerrymendering effect...which one would nominally think would be the motivational complaint behind the effort in the first place....was largely to blame for the one-sided slide into hell that had already taken place. The emergent selectees were in many cases Hispanics whose application essays were obviously ghost-written by various college English professors with the expected idolization of “diversity” and “inclusiveness” and “environmental concerns” and preserving the great CA way of life, which for anyone who has been here for 25+ years has been careening into the crapper with gusto.
I’d have loved to have known the California your brother described. Even as things are, it’s still stunning. It speaks to me like Ireland or parts of New Mexico do. Is the Central Coast gone bad, too? Sort of halfway between, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo? Even Olema headed over to Marin County from San Francisco was an awesome place, an island of conservative sanity surrounded by lib wackiness but it was all just so beautiful. The air smelled spicy in the fall from the native plants. The fog rolling in every afternoon late, rolling out in the morning. Loved it. I hate I missed knowing the place when it was well run and not largely hostile to people such as myself.

I knew it too, I’ve been here only a year less than he’s been here. It’s funny you mention the central coast, because I have various very larval plans to investigate that area further....as does my brother! He is actually down there today as I write this looking at a piece of property that looks, from all appearances, just smashing. We may co-involve on this.
I have always liked that area. It is not as speedy to get to as the areas served by Hwy 5 down the center of the state. You have to get off the interstate and drive on Hwy 101 (and others) which are in some areas scenic, very scenic, in other areas, very hazardous or just plain slow.
I have said this ten times in the past week: I’ve always liked that area, though I can’t tell you exactly what I like about it. Most of the very brief times I have spent there absolutely nothing was going on. It was very sleepy. And maybe that’s what I liked about it; it seemed much more honest than LA or SF. LA, I happen to like a lot despite the congestion, because if you are there, you are there to do business, and there are a zillion other people looking to do business there and that’s that. I am (for me, unfortunately) up in the SF Bay Area as (within the family) primary caretaker for my aging parents and even though it has its scenic merits, I happen to hate it. I lived up here in the 70’s when I first came to CA and it is “been there, done that” for me in spades. It’s a blatheringly liberal, very anti-business area that is 100% as congested as LA as far as I am concerned, and the roads and traffic are crap.
I haven’t solidified my plans to relocate there and I’m not entirely free to do so as long as I have my parental burden to contend with. But if I stay in CA I will be spending time scouting that general area for potential relo spots. You can find some very nice non-RE bubble areas with ocean breezes and reasonable access to LA/SF as you choose or choose not and there’s quite the dialed-down lifestyle available if you look carefully. As you imply, if you can get a little bit rural, you can *possibly* find some areas that are not libnests or at least you can isolate yourself from same. I suspect it will take some effort, but then, anything good usually does.
