On Sept. 11, 2001, the core of al-Qaeda was concentrated in a single city: Karachi, Pakistan.

At a hospital, the accused mastermind of the bombing of the USS Cole was recovering from a tonsillectomy. Nearby, the alleged organizer of the 2002 bombing in Bali, Indonesia, was buying lab equipment for a biological weapons program. And in a safe house, the man who would later describe himself as the intellectual author of the Sept. 11 attacks was with other key al-Qaeda members watching the scenes from New York and Washington unfold on television.

This was after we'd spent the '80 and '90s shoveling billions in military aid to Pakistan. And apparently al-Qaeda characters are still running around Pakistan ten years later, shielded by Pakistani intelligence from the US while we continue giving them billions in military aid. There's an inability to learn from past mistakes in our foreign policy. And the world would have been spared a great deal of grief if Pakistan had never been created in the first place.

Pakistan has successfully used terrorist and nuclear threat to squeeze America's balls for decades now. The wikileaks stuff about Pakistan-Taliban-AQ is old news. And doesn't matter Republican or Democrat, US administrations over a period of a few decades have made plenty of noises but haven't had the courage to deal with Pakistan any other way except for eventually giving into their demand. Pakistan has total leverage over US and US has none. It is yet another reflection of America's diminishing global influence and overall geopolitical options in the region.
