Firms plan private war against pirates

MOGADISHU, Somalia, April 26 (UPI) -- International naval forces are expected to step up operations against Somali pirates but private security companies are seeking to provide armed escorts for merchant ships to counter the pirates' expansion into the Indian Ocean.

The leading British insurer Jardine Lloyd Thompson is organizing a fleet of 18 gunboats to shepherd convoys of vessels across the Gulf of Aden, which runs into Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean, vital trading and oil routes now under increasing threat.

...

Although business sources say much of the funds to finance the program have been secured, the CEP has not yet been approved by the European Union.

...

The plan calls for the escort boats to be armed with heavy .50 caliber/12.7mm machine guns and crewed by armed former military personnel, mainly Britons, South Africans, Australians and New Zealanders.

Apparently the insurance companies are tired of paying multimillion dollar ransoms, yet they have to beg permission from the EU to protect themselves, the same bureaucracy that has failed to do the job.

Step One: Float a big tanker with one of those Euro-gay country flags that pay ransoms, like the Danes, but have it rigged to the gills with guns and missles. Pretend to run away when attacked so as to draw in more pirates, then change the flag to a black one right before opening up on em. Kill all of them on the spot, and return to step one. If mother ship is found, let the rookies practice shooting it until it sinks. Training is good.

There should be bounties offered for pirates. $25,000/ear would be cheaper than paying the ransoms or the insurance claims and, at that price, there would be SOF aplenty taking care of business.

This is a real blast from the past. Jardine Matheson got its start operating armed merchant ships involved in the opium trade (legal throughout the West until drug prohibition in the early 20th century). They’re no longer trading opium, but operating gunboats to protect shipping is an echo of its storied past.

I have been thinking that some enterprising safari operator can advertise a cruise safari. I would kinda be interested in that.

America has AGAIN failed to lead,
in addition to your point about the bloated global bureaucracy.
When America is weak, people suffer, pay ransoms and die. Liberty and prosperity shrink as Pirates are enriched.

That’s a great idea...it would pay for itself.

There should be a taxidermist on board. The safari hunters could go home with some interesting home decor items.

Perhaps a gun testing safari - - with all sorts of big calibers and loads that require more than one man to carry. Test your accuracy skills out on pirates!

I’m sure they would have no problem filling the cabins.

That would be a great type of Q-boat to have sail the jihadi seas. Make sure it is equipped with a UAV or two you can launch to have an eye in the sky for monitoring, surveillance and recon.

Once it sails use the S3 method of taking them out.
Shoot,
Sink,
Shut up.

Name your favorite weapon you'd like to see used against the jihadi pirates aboard a merc ship that'll be protecting the other ships out there. My first choice is a Quad50.

There should be bonuses paid for confirmed kills.

“My first choice is a Quad50.”

Mine would be a 30mm mini-gun.

That would be a Q-ship. A merchantman with sides that would drop down revealing a plethora of offensive armament.

This week's special: man the rails with the famous “Ma Deuce”. Trip includes, airfare, meals and incendiary rounds.

Nothing says “counter-jihad” like a Quad 50! They were used as anti-aircraft guns but there isn’t anything preventing them front being used against boats in the liquid jungle of jihad.

“America has AGAIN failed to lead”

There’s a definition of what’s going on there, it’s called a POWER VACUUM. If we still had our 600 ship navy, we could spare a few boats to clean out the area...but those days are gone, thanks to protecting our PRECIOUS Social Security, at all costs.
