The XM2010 sniper rifle is making a name for itself in Afghanistan. Officials won’t say how many are there or where they are. But at the time of the Sept. 20 contract, officials said the first 250 rifles would be ready by early December and sent directly to Afghanistan.

Man alive! Talk about bare bones - must be a tightly machined platform.

When you're carrying your rifle mile after mile, up and down the mountains of Afghanistan, you don't want to carry an ounce more than you need to.

I’m going to guess a rifle able to take Lapua would be heavier than they wanted to take up and down the mountains.

".300 Win Mag is a damn awesome round! They seem to be inherently accurate, even from an out of the box cheap hunting rifle."

Shortly before he died, Jeff Cooper speculated about the possibility of a man being able to place 20 shots in a 20-inch circle in 20 seconds at 1,000 yards. Certainly, it would take an exceptional shooter with an exceptional firearm. IMHO, perhaps the rifle best suited to service this challenge would be something along the lines of the Walther WA2000 in .300 WinMag...

You mention the Lapua. I just read that the .338 Lapua is being groomed to replace this .300 Magnum round. In will also be an M-24 load. The article says that the .338 Lapua will be the in between ammo. That is between the normal NATO ammo and the .50 BMG that goes with the Barrett.

I guess you may be right. Never fired that round so I don’t know if it fits a standard length (30.06) action.

I remember reading that. Was that the thought behind the scout rifle?

I like this version:

Do you know if it fits the same action? The Lapua seems be like the 6.5x55 round, VERY efficient and effective.

Nope; Cooper started toying around with the concept of the Scout Rifle well before that I think Steyr was the first to purpose-build a rifle along the lines of Cooper’s parameters but of course, Springfield, Ruger and others have all built their submissions since. The 20/20/20/1000 was an idea he tossed out into the (shooting) public domain for discussion in one of his very last columns before he died.

Guess it could not be the scout, 20 shots in 20 seconds implies a self loader just for starters. Also the scout scope is not ideal for those long shots. DUH (smacks head!)

FReeper ovrtaxt posted that in a reply maybe six years ago and I adopteded it when I read it. I have found no reason to replace it since he did as it just becomes more true.

I picked up an AR-10 in 338 fed last week. She weighs like 2 stags and I’m wondering if in the end, I’ll be using the 6.8 spc more than I want. AR-10 feels like M-14; just too heavy except on atv or snowmachine. Keep it a trk gun more than likely.
