Wal-Mart: Our shoppers are 'running out of money'
CNNMoney ^ | 4/27/2011

Posted on 04/27/2011 6:58:06 PM PDT by Altura Ct.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Wal-Mart's core shoppers are running out of money much faster than a year ago due to rising gasoline prices, and the retail giant is worried, CEO Mike Duke said Wednesday.

"We're seeing core consumers under a lot of pressure," Duke said at an event in New York. "There's no doubt that rising fuel prices are having an impact."

Wal-Mart shoppers, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, typically shop in bulk at the beginning of the month when their paychecks come in.

Lately, they're "running out of money" at a faster clip, he said.

Wal-Mart's ready to do battle on prices

"Purchases are really dropping off by the end of the month even more than last year," Duke said. "This end-of-month [purchases] cycle is growing to be a concern.

Wal-Mart (WMT, Fortune 500), which averages 140 million shoppers weekly to its stores in the United States, is considered a barometer of the health of the consumer and the economy.

To that end, Duke said he's not seeing signs of a recovery yet.

With food prices rising, Duke said Wal-Mart is charging customers more for some fresh groceries while reducing prices on other merchandise such as electronics.

Wal-Mart has struggled with seven straight quarters of sales declines in its stores.

Come to any city in Jersey. You will find plenty of Africans filling up their carts via the EBT card.

There are millions of people who live off of SS who are neither old or severely disabled. This is particularly true since AFDC was abolished.

Then the state is not in compliance with the 2008 Farm Act, if the assets would actually act to disqualify an applicant. One person said similar on another thread. In my state, the assets ARE enumerated, but regardless of the value do not cause a disqualification.

But it would take Billy$ quite a while to enumerate his assets (see my #184). He is married with what, two dependents? Then his earned and unearned income limit would be just under $40k. He gets that in a blink of the eye!

The Wal Marts in my area have very poor quality produce. Thankfully, we still have some old-school produce/farmers markets around here.

There is a reason we aren’t seeing soup lines. That chart illustrates it.

Oh that's it, it's the minimum wage that collapsed this economy!....

It wasn't the corrupt free trade laws, it's wasn't off shoring tens of thousands of companies and businesses to Communist countries

It isn't the endless conga-line of tens of millions of illegals collecting welfare and choking off our health-care and our entire system

It wasn't corrupt government working in concert with Wall Street and the banksters, as they demanded we bail them out for multiple trillions!

It's was the minimum wage hike, that is casing the dollar to be worthless and making everyone's wages stagnant, and prices to skyrocket!

That's it!

By all means, lets reduce minimum wage to 5.75 an hour...Then all those poor slobs can work for gas money!

That'll save us!

You bet!

I don’t like big box stores, in general. It’s a sign of the times...where our country is so focused on consumption and not production. We have a poorly designed credit/banking system.

Remember the gardens we used to have?

Our church just had a gardening workshop on growing your own veggies, etc.

I hear ya!

We're feeding 3 growing kids; my cart is always full when I go to Walmart. It's gotten so bad lately, I'm making all my baked goods (including biscuits) from raw ingredients at home, making more casseroles, pulling every bit of uneaten chicken off the bird to make into other chicken dishes, and drinking lots of water instead of juices at our house. Thankfully, we stocked up big time months ago, and only dip into reserves when we are in a pinch, but more times than not, we're adding to the stockpile.

And there is no magic money card for my family. It's all debit cards or hard-earned cash.

No, because it’s hard to believe people have to be told the obvious.

My wife is employed by the state of Texas. She works for her paycheck. And by “works” I mean she damn sure earns it. She’s paid on the first of the month.

When I worked for the local university I was paid twice a month, one of those checks being paid at the start of the month. I hauled furniture and drove trucks. Lots of heavy manual labor.

So, you would be wrong on these counts, and by the look of the replies you have been corrected by many other people as well.

Not working people, indeed.

Nope, sadly. 1995 is just 4 years away from getting ‘classic’ plates in some states.
