Lufkin, TX — A city planner who had used his public Twitter feed to express derogatory feelings about the city and region resigned Wednesday morning after being confronted by city officials about the comments, City Manager Paul Parker said Thursday.
Attempts to reach City Planner Trent Cantrell for comment Wednesday were unsuccessful. Cantrell in late March posted the message “Lufkin is an armpit. I know (...) I have to live here temporarily.” Months earlier he posted, “Hello there. Just waiting for the heat to leave for good. Of course, Deep East Texas will still be a (expletive) hole.”
Cantrell, who had been an employee with the city since April 2009, apparently removed the posts from the online social networking site Wednesday morning, after The Lufkin Daily News sought comment from city officials about the posts. Cantrell did not return a request for comment left in his office. His Lufkin home phone number is unlisted.
It is a pretty accurate assessment.

This reminds me of an old Money Magazine’s Best Places to Live article. They ranked 300 cities. Lawrence, Massachusetts was ranked 297th. It was described as looking like the inside of an old radio. The city sued Time Warner for defamation. The judge at trial, familiar with the area, threw the suit out. He said it really did look like an old radio.

If you don’t like living in the country don’t move there. I personally Like East Texas and would like to find a way to live there.
It smacks of elitism to take a gummint job and crap on the people paying the bills. I think I’d prefer the Lufkin folks over this ingrate.

In a sane world a 'City Planner' would be held at least partially accountable for the environs in which he lives. If the town is a dump, perhaps it's because their city planner is incompetent.
Lufkin is a small city with old sections and some new subdivisions. It has three golf courses, one of them a very good one. It has a college. Lots of outdoor sports, especially fishing.
There are a lot of places I would put down before mentioning Lufkin.

I like Lufkin...it has alot of big city perks nestled in a small town atmosphere. People there are still the salt of the earth. Of course it has big city problems but what community doesn’t these days but an armpit? HARDLY!:(
Lived in Deep East Texas for a considerable period of time. I applaud this man for having the stones to be so honest about the area.
Amazing! How could a town hire someone so stupid or so elitist? Perhaps the hiring authorities were besotted with his (Ivy League?) degree and didn’t bother to assess his basic intelligence. In today’s world it is not unusual to see people employeed at a level far beyond their Peter Principle.
I always thought it was NJ that was the armpit of the nation.

He’s nuts! We live 75 miles from Lufkin and go there frequently to shop and dine. It is a city of about 30,000 people but 100,000 come there to work daily. “Old Lufkin” might be denigrated but if one drives around the loop there are all kinds of new businesses and very fine homes. I’ve often said if we had seen Lufkin when we moved to Texas from Missouri in 2001 that we would have wound up living there instead. I don’t know why anyone would bash east Texas. This is the “Pineywoods” area which is totally unlike west Texas. Tyler, to the north and east of us was ranked in one survey as the #3 best small city in America. Personally, I prefer Lufkin although Tyler is a beautiful city. I have no clue what this clown is talking about.
