WASHINGTON – Osama bin Laden, the glowering mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks that murdered thousands of Americans, was killed in an operation led by the United States, President Barack Obama said Sunday.

"Justice has been done," said the president in a dramatic late-night announcement at the White House.

A small team of Americans killed bin Laden in a firefight Sunday at a compound in Pakistan, the president said, and took custody of his remains. American officials said they were being handled in accordance with Islamic tradition.

I was living in Newark and used to look across and see the towers going up every day(’70-’71) then I got taken in THE LAST draft! Sworn in Dec 1, 1971. Six days later, Prez Nixon declared the end of the draft.

“Can I go home, then?” I stupidly asked my drill sergeant. That question cost me a lot of pushups.

What’s released for public consumption doesn’t necessarily reflect reality either. :)

You can bet your last dollar that the SEALs manhandling this meatbag into the chopper were not kind or gentle about it, and to add insult to injury, even if he is buried at sea with an imam’s blessing, it will be an American imam.

It is grievous that there is such a thing as an American imam.

Osama is the Jordanian spelling, I’m not sure what Usama is.

To be technical, it's spelled أسامة بن محمد بن عوض بن لادن‎ (Arabic, not sure if it'll come through on all systems). There's not usually an easy "right" or "wrong" spelling when you're transliterating from a non-Roman alphabet. That's why most sources use Mao Tse-Tung but some use Mao Zhedong; why you have discrepancies like Bombay/Mumbai, Peking/Bejing, Calcutta/Kolkatta; and why no two news outlets have ever agreed on the spelling of Muammar Ghadafi.

Puzzling. CNN claims a U.S. official reports Osama has already been buried at sea.

Our decision should be based on what WE think is best, not on what the Muslim reaction might be.

Not with this President in office.

Nice pictures...

I can’t imagine growing up in a large City...I grew up in fields, forests, lakes and streams...What a contrast...

“I will believe he is dead when I see proof. This administration cannot be trusted, and I wouldn’t put it past them to try to fake it

That's the way I see it...Get rid of the body within 24 hours with no pictures...The 'compound' is burning to the ground as we speak...Not a lick of proof for the general public that Bin Laden was killed and no place to investigate for proof...

Beautiful photos, Wolfstar. I grew up in NYC and I too remember watching the building of the WTC. My reaction is the same as yours, every time I see an old photo of them or fly into NY and look down at the site and see what those animals did to us. Real grief.

They say they respected his body - that's only to keep the Muslim hoards from going nuts. My guess is they tied a 50 lb weight around his carcass and unceremoniously dumped his body into the ocean.

obama said that Bin Laden was “not a muslim leader”. What utter BS and garbage!!!!

Bin Laden did everything in the name of islam, to advance the muslim goal to create a worldwide Caliphate and crush the infidels!!!!

obama has to do everything to make islam look good. The simple reason for that is that obama himself is a muslim!!!!

Meanwhile, ever since Bin Laden has been bottled up in the Afghanistan/Pakistan area, and the (initial) defeat of the Taliban, Al Qaeda has become a decentralized organization, able to strike anywhere (think London, Madrid, Bali, etc.). And the parent of Al Qaeda, the muslim Brotherhood, is welcomed into our large urban areas (e.g., those huge mosques), and even into the White House!!!!

Expect massive amounts of trouble ahead!

Why are you supporting the murder of US servicemembers?

Millions of muslims admire OBL. Desecrating his body and insulting Islam supports muslim terrorist organizations. Muslim terrorist organizations attack US servicemembers in Iraq and Afghanistan. So I ask you again why are you supporting the murder of US servicemembers?

Yeah but if treating his remains with respect will keep more of our boys from being crippled or killed then I’m all for it.

Pick up the Koran and you find this will not make the Muzzies our friends nor will it stop them from killing Americans. Osamas head should have been brought back to USA for us to see.

In fact, they did NOT follow Islamic law on this.

“623. * If a person dies on a ship and if there is no fear of the decay of the dead body and if there is no problem in retaining it for sometime on the ship, it should be kept on it and buried in the ground after reaching the land.”

Buried at sea is to be avoided! And only done when there is no other viable option.

Bin Laden was killed on land, so there was no religious excuse to not bury him on land pronto. They move the body to a ship - a no-no - and then dumped it overboard when “there [was] no fear of the decay of the dead body and if there is no problem in retaining it for sometime on the ship”.

The Navy may say they complied with tradition, but couldn’t have screwed it up more without adding bacon. The term “malicious obedience” comes to mind, but I don’t think malice was involved.

BBC news: “US media reports said that the body was buried at sea to conform with Islamic practice of a burial within 24 hours and to prevent any grave becoming a shrine.”

I still want proof but I’m glad there is no grave to be a shrine.

A normal grave on terra firma would be unthinkable. It would become a place of pilgrimage and a focal point for the radicals who regard him as a hero and a martyr. bin Laden would become even larger in death than he was in life. To Mecca and Medina there would be added yet another place of pilgrimage for the Muslim masses.

Burying him at sea was meant to forestall that scenario. It is intended to prevent the construction of a site of homage to the bloodthirsty Sheikh.
