Canadian voters have delivered Conservative Leader Stephen Harper another election night victory, but it is still too close to call whether he will head a minority or majority government, CBC News projects. Meanwhile NDP Leader Jack Layton was set to become Official Opposition leader.

The NDP, according to projections, made a major breakthrough and appeared to have more than doubled their seat count, while the Liberals were poised to suffer a major electoral loss.

As of 10:25 p.m. EST, the Conservatives were leading or elected in 152 seats, followed by the NDP with 100, Liberals with 30 and the Bloc with four.

In Quebec, Bloc Leader Gilles Duceppe was trailing behind NDP candidate Hélène Laverdière in the riding of Laurier-Sainte-Marie, in what was shaping out to be a disastrous night for the sovereignist party.

Tories have won a majority! Big win in Ontario.

Ontario??? I thought they were Canada's version of California!! (Left leaning)

Socialist NPD is now in second place for the first time. They’ve almost swept Quebec. The separatist bloc is all but dead. Their clownish leader lost his own seat. An NPD college student who doesn’t speak French and just got back from Vegas won a Quebec seat. Lots of nobody candidates who thought they were gonna be sacrificial lambs.

The NDP (What is New Democratic about Socialism??) swept Quebec??

a college student from Las Vegas won?? I didn't know Nevadans had a riding!!! /s

Liberals are now a rump. Their leader lost his own seat as well. He had the perfect pedigree to be a Prime Minister. LOL.

I hope 2012 the Dems will see the same results as the Liberal got!!!

The Green party leader, a stupid slag who thinks children should vote, may be elected in British Columbia.

Yes, children should vote!!! Right after they graduate from High school and get a job!! /s

Conservatives still think of themselves as the blues not the reds. It’s the MSM that decided to switch the colors.

FWIW. Federally the Liberals had a powerful presence in Ontario. However, in provincial election many years ago, the provincial Liberal government under Premier Peterson, lost to the NDP. All over an overly optimistic statement about the deficit. Said it was zero.

It was just under 4 billion dollars though. The NDP got in on the "scandal" bolstered by the press. They were elected to power. After a year they put Ontario into a 20 million dollar extra debt. Standard and Poors claimed the A rating of Ontario would go down and warned if it was another 20 million the next year. It would face bankruptcy. Bye bye NDP provincial government.

The NDP had spent widely on some sort of stimulus monies and it did not work. Thus the huge overspending at comparitive exchange rates. Hence a distrust of the now former NDP premier Bob Rae in fiscal matters- he is now a high placed Liberal

Yeah, but a bunch of U.S. conservatives still fall for the media talking points, adapting slogans like "Think Red" (some "conservative" organization in Illinois even promoted this by selling red wristbands to "make Illinois a red state"... well, they certainly made it "red"!) Even freepers repeat this crap, "we should focus on electing conservatives in our RED states if we want a Senate majority" blah blah blah... and the two parties have redesigned their logos to adhere to mainstream media speak... SHAME on the GOP for wanting to be "red":

>> It looks like the Bloc and Liberals made a huge mistake in voting to bring down the government. Epic miscalculation. Forcing voters to endure a fourth election in seven years? I'll say. <<

Bloc Quebecois & the Canadian Liberal Party must be taking advise from the California Republican Party about what to do when the opposition runs the legislature.

If you need further proof that Harper is not conservative, read this article from Terrance Corcoran, Editor of the Financial Post, in today’s Financial Post section of the National Post. The National Post is Canada’s only right of centre national newspaper (previously owned by Conrad Black, which endorsed the Harper Tories prior to the election. Corcoran is not a disgruntled wing-nut. He speaks plainly and directly about a simple reality - conservatism does not exist in Canadian federal politics. And he’s only talking of fiscal issues - not the Tories’ complete abandonment of key social issues.

I’ve included the title of the article, a brief snippet and the link to the full article. Enjoy.

IN CANADA, WE HAVE NO CONSERVATIVES

“The Harper Tories hold the upper hand, but they are no conservatives. In Ottawa, no party stands for less intrusive government and disciplined spending. Chances of lower taxes and greater reliance on private enterprise and markets in key economic sectors are now out of reach.”

Quebec is by far the most left wing province, not Ontario.

One the NPD candidates in a Quebec seat can hardly speak French and went on Vacation to Las Vegas during the height of the campaign. She won anyway.

The left really messed up but calling this election. They cooked up some “contempt of Parliament” BS as an excuse to bring down the government. They thought they could shame the country into voting for them. Epic fail.

The left is in disarray. On DU the Liberals and NPD supporters are feuding and blaming each other.

NPD had to become “Bloc lite” in their promises to Quebec. That could alienate the rest of country.

The insane Green leader won her seat, beating a Harper cabinet minister. But silver lining, a stronger Green party means more vote splitting on the left.

Harper is gonna cut off public funding for the parties which is expected to especially hurt the liberals. The Conservatives are the only party that fundraises effectively.
