Poll: Nine-point bounce for Obama after bin Laden news (Barf)
msnbc ^ | 5/3/11 | Carrie Dann

Less than 48 hours after President Barack Obama announced the death of the man who orchestrated the 9/11 attacks, one new poll shows the president’s approval rating has jumped up by nine points, with Americans’ opinions of his handling of terrorism reaching the highest point during Obama’s presidency.

The overnight poll, conducted by The Washington Post and the Pew Research Center, found that 56 percent of respondents approve of Obama’s performance as president, up nine points from similar polls last month. That boost includes a substantial bump of 10 points among independents.

The poll, conducted Monday night, offers a first glimpse of the coveted “bounce” that the president could benefit from in the wake of the successful covert operation to hunt down Osama bin Laden, although subsequent multi-evening polls are likely to give a fuller picture of the nation’s reaction to the news.

In the Post-Pew poll, 69 percent of respondents said that they approve of Obama’s handling of the threat of terrorism, the highest rating since he became president in 2009. And more than three-quarters of Americans believe that Obama deserves credit for bin Laden’s death, with 35 percent saying he should get “a great deal” of credit for the terrorist leader’s killing.

(That number falls substantially among GOP respondents. While about six-in-ten self-identified Republicans say the president deserves “some” recognition for the successful operation in Abbottabad, just 17 percent say he is worthy of “a great deal” of credit. Over 80 percent of Republicans say that laurel should go to former President George W. Bush.)

Even if this is true, only 9 points? Bush 41 was up to 90% after the Gulf War, and Bush 43 was up to 80% after the War in Afghanistan started.

Perhaps they should not have waited until people bought gas at $4 a gallon before taking this poll.

The overnight poll, conducted by The Washington Post and the Pew Research Center, found that 56 percent of respondents

Define: respondents

In the Post-Pew poll, 69 percent of respondents said that they approve of Obama’s handling of the threat of terrorism

Was it the 2 1/2 week wait to address the nation after the Christmas underwear bomber or the 7 months it took for him to decide to send more troops to Afghanistan?

This is totally contrary to other polling that came out today like Rasmussen. This is the MSM artificially inflating, in a vain attempt to give this loser credibility. Won’t work. Fuel and food prices are high and unemployment is still 9%. That is what people are really worried about.

Dead (terrorist) cat bounce. It’ll be gone quicker than it rose.

Did anyone hear the ex-Navy Seal call into Rush's show this morning? His theory is that BO was dragged into making the decision kicking and screaming because the word was finally out on Bin Laden's location, and if he hadn't acted it would have all unraveled because people were prepared to blab.

In other words, another purely craven political act, no heroism on the part of Dear Reader.

Just 9 points, eh?

After all the messaging and stroking that the SRM has been doing?

Pretty pathetic, when you consider that President Bush got a 9 point bounce upon the capture of Saddam Hussein in spite of the same SRM hammering away at his approval ratings from the very beginning.

Pollsters trying to give him a bigger bounce than he could do on his own.

In a month when gas is at $5 and he still won’t drill this bump will be meaningless.

...grain....of.....salt.....give it a week or two as gas and food prices continue to climb, etc. and said “bounce” will look like a plummet..... =.=

up nine points from similar polls last month

The key phrase of the report. Similar. Not same, similar. The model was tweaked to show a bigger bounce.

The numbers are in. It was a poll of 457 selected Obama supporters, not the Usual 1,000 randomly selected Obama supporters. What a surprise. They had to cook the books to get only 9 points.

I expected they'd push-poll about terrorism, maybe do 'adults' instead of 'voters' or 'likely voters' and get a bump of 20+.

I didn't check the details on the group polled for this one.

We'll see if Thursday's victory lap at Ground Zero will play favorably to anyone outside NYC. He's going for campaign purposes.

A few in media have noticed the "cheering" crowds have been young, those who were kids or maybe teens during 9/11. A report on Yahoo search stats suggested teenagers didn't know who OBL was or why this was news.
