Wow, what a story - shocking to read it in WaPo. The kid is certifiable, and has been for a long, long time. Issa needs to investigate how this kid got any security clearance, much less the kind of clearance to do what he did.

Army specialists start at E-4. This puke is an E-2 now. What a career path! How the hell did he keep a security clearance?

I don’t mean to be harsh but
Bradly Manning is a traitorous faggot who deserves to be executed by firing squad.

Yes — what a nut!
Trouble was, he was a bright nut, well taught in a home school of dysfunction, and he’d almost instinctively know how to buffalo through the screening.
Still what he did was hardly involuntary like the “stopping and staring” seizures. The armed services had concrete expectations of him as a custodian of confidential and secret data, and he chose to fall afoul of them for the sake of his philosophies. He should hardly be surprised to be slapped on the wrist or worse, quibbles and allegations about how he’s being kept now quite aside.

There seems to be a parallel between this story and Ted Kaczynski's. High tech brain with social adaptation problems. I have a relative who is a “Dangerous Minds” type, 800 math SAT, unable to deal with family issues, arsonist, suicide. Manning's sexual identity problem, rejection by his father, even size may have contributed to his self loathing. Certainly the lock ups of muscle function and black out anger issues should have been red siren warnings. I'd say not guilty due to insanity isn't unlikely.

The Army had security protocols that would have prevented the breach if followed, the official added. But safeguards to detect unauthorized installation of software had not been activated at the SCIF. Audit logs of computer activity were not reviewed. Bags were not inspected as personnel entered and left. To boost morale, the official said, people were allowed to bring in CDs and listen to them. The unit personnel that had responsibility for security of the network failed to do their job, the official said. It was flat-out apathy and a failure of the chain of command".
Silly question, but why aren't the people who were supposed to be taking care of these issues sharing a cell next to Manning???

One of the biggest leaks of classified documents in history happened because some unstable homo got snubbed by his boyfriend. Hey, I have an idea! Let's repeal "Don't ask, don't tell" and make the Marines take courses on accepting buggers in the barracks!
Oh wait - - the Democrats already did that just a few months ago.
Congratulations, America, on your "historic" election of President Obama.

a hacker space in the basement of the computer science building at Boston University. So our colleges teach and provide space for hacking?
Never mind - move along

I've been asking this question since it began: Why wasn't Manning's Company Commander court-martialed ?
He facilitated Manning by not enforcing the regulations at the SCIF.
Clearly the CO did not heed the First Sargent.

Most disturbing thing I gleaned was the casual attitude on the physical security of our assets; such as allowing CD players to be brought to work stations and negligence in rigorous checking of the logs.
Bradley needs some cellmates at Leavenworth - some of whom have brass on their shoulders.
