Chicago aldermen want ticker tape parade for Navy SEALs who killed bin Laden

The city that was the first in the nation to hold a cathartic welcome home parade for Vietnam War veterans would do the same for the elite Navy SEALs team that took out Osama bin Laden under a plan floated Wednesday by five influential aldermen.

Ald. James Balcer (11th), the Vietnam War veteran who has championed veterans issues in the City Council, is pushing for the ticker-tape parade to honor the military in general and the Navy SEALs Team Six credited with executing bin Laden in particular.

Balcer was joined by Aldermen George Cardenas (12th); Edward M. Burke (14th); Ariel Reboyras (30th), and Ray Suarez (31st).

Does the team really want this exposure? Doubt it.

Sure...make them known and targets. What a bunch of backward idiots in Chicago!

Nuts to that.

Have a parade to celebrate the death of an enemy, sure. But leave the SEALs out of it. They don't want the notoriety, nor do their families. There are still plenty of enemies out there and they're f**king crazy. Discretion is the better part of valor -- avoid a needlessly endangering exposure. The SEALs and their families have already done enough for America.

What’s next, a ticker tape parade for our best spies?

You’ve got that right. Obama needs to leave these guys alone. They do their job and it is very dangerous. They need not be identified or glorified. This idiot administration is just trying to knock it down.

I’d be fine with a general celebration of the bin Laden’s defeat. Heck, they could throw an old-fashion Roman-style Triumph as a sign of America’s strength and ultimate victory over bin Laden, and I’d be just fine with that, too.

BUT I absolutely, positively DO NOT want the identity of the men who carried out this mission revealed to the general public. To do so would: A) End their careers as SEALs by destroying their anonymity; B) Make them the target of every Islamist nutjob around the globe; C) Put these men’s families and friends at risk (Chicago aldermen are plenty stupid, but I’m sure no one on FR is naive enough to think Al-Qaeda would hesitate to target the SEAL team’s parents, siblings, and children as revenge).

Even the thought of this is a bad idea on just about every level.

Doubtless well intended, like the parade for the Viet vets, but yeah, this is not the time to remove the Seals’ secrecy. No need to rail at the aldermen, just tell them thanks but no thanks, the honorees will not wish to be known or present.

I am a full time professional freelance photographer in Tampa, FL. MacDill AFB is in Tampa and it's home to operations for the Special Ops people. I do an occasional shoot out there for MacDill and I can tell you firsthand this kind of attention would NOT be welcomed by the men and women of SOCOM!

Recently I covered a promotion ceremony for one of their men who nearly died, and in fact lost a leg, as the result of an IED in Iraq. It took me more than an hour to Photoshop out of the pictures all indications of rank or ID.

Great idea Alderman. If you dopes in Chicago do this ticker tape, watch all the filthy radical muslims in Detroit to head down en mass with guns. Something tells me that the parade will turn into a shoot out at the OK Corral. Absolutely ridiculous idea.

All this celebrating is not a good thing. I would have been fine with the Pres. just visiting the troops to congradulate their mission. But all this with students in the streets celebrating, Ground Zero photo opt, and now there’s more! Bull crap...it’s getting to be just another political circus and it looks bad for Americans to be making this kind of fuss......especially since there’s no body to prove anything Washington’s says.
