That is still insane. They obviously didn’t have enough people watching those kids.
Yikes. I just signed my daughter’s permission slip for the zoo. At least I know she’s way too smart to try something like this.

A 7-year-old boy is hospitalized after being attacked by a leopard at the Sedgwick County Zoo.
Dispatchers said the call came in just before 1:30.
Zoo officials said the boy climbed a guardrail to get closer to the leopard cage. The amur leopard was able to reach the child with both of its paws, clawing the boy on his neck. The boy suffered wounds on his neck and head.
The zoo official said people riding the zoo tram saw the attack, jumped off and scared the leopard away. John Delgado was one of those people. He said he kicked the leopard in the head. Delgado and a woman kept the boy calm until medical help arrived.
Via Christi on St. Francis reports that the child is now in fair condition.
Zoo officials do have the animal under control. There are no plans to euthanize the animal. It is being kept in its holding cage beneath the public display area.
According to a USD 259 spokesperson, the student was from Linwood Elementary School. His name has not been released.
The leopard, named Nia, is four years old.
Let’s hope the cat isn’t punished for the foolishness of the people.

There are 72 million dogs in the US versus a few big cats. The odds of being killed by a dog are infinitesimally smaller by comparison.
There were 33 dog attacks ending in human deaths last year (2010).
As of April 24th, 2011, there have been 5 deaths.
The majority of deaths in both years resulted from attacks by pit bulls or pit bull-type dogs.
Compare this with fatal cougar attacks - 23 in a period of 120 YEARS:
“At least 23 people in North America were killed by cougars between 1890 and 2010, including six in California. More than two-thirds of the Canadian fatalities occurred on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Although fatal cougar attacks are extremely rare and occur much less frequently than fatal snake bites, fatal lightning strikes or fatal bee stings, children are particularly vulnerable. The vast majority of the child victims listed herein were alone or accompanied only by other children.”

What is interesting about these statistics is the prevalence of children as victims, both of dogs and big cats.
A large percentage of the total US population is in the presence of a dog on a daily basis. Out of that, there were 33 deaths in a year? That is what you call extremely safe.
To compare the two for danger, you compare death rate per exposure. All that let’s you know is the obvious, big cats are dangerous and dogs are not.
I’m not disputing big cats are dangerous.
But not all attacks by dogs are reported. We had two deaths caused by pit bulls in my town last year, both children. Neither are on that list.
Dogs are natural predators. How they behave around people has a lot to do with how they are raised and what care breeders take in choosing temperaments. I have two dogs, a Springer Spaniel and a Golden Retriever, and neither are emotionally unstable.
That’s very unusual that those were not reported. The CDC has kept stats on this for some time.
Some dogs aren’t good around children and some have poor genetic temperament. I’ll admit I don’t have a good opinion of Springer Spaniels because of temperament. But also it’s true some people get dogs without the proper attitude for owning dogs. I see that too often. It’s the Disney attitude that dogs are just little humans. Neglecting training or discipline in the home is a recipe for disaster. Usually the dog pays with his life, in some rare occasions it’s a kid.
Yes they are...the smartest, most successful of cats...and God surely didn’t create a more magnificent looking creature.
Leopards are badass.
Amen...I’m against this horror of killing an animal for reasons like this...humans intrude, the animal does what he’s created by God to do and pays the price with his death??? It’s insanity.
