The Holland America liner, the Oosterdam, which makes regular cruises to the Mexican Riviera, will no longer sail out of San Diego after April 2012.Regular voyages to the Mexican Riviera, long a mainstay of San Diegos cruise ship business, are likely to end by the fall of 2012 with the decision by Holland America to move one of its key liners to Australia.
The cruise lines 1,926-passenger Oosterdam and the 2,500-passenger Carnival Spirit are the only two vessels that currently head to the Mexican Riviera on a regular basis, and both are now scheduled to leave San Diego after April of 2012. The Spirit as well will be relocated to Australia.
While the fall 2012-2013 schedules for the cruise lines have yet to be finalized, Port of San Diego official Rita Vandergaw acknowledged that for now it appears that San Diego will no longer have regular cruises to the Riviera.
The redeployment of the Oosterdam, which makes seven-day cruises to Mexico, marks the third ship to leave San Diego waters in the wake of a prolonged economic downturn and rising violence in Mexico. The net effect has been a plunge in cruise ship calls, which are an important component of San Diegos tourism economy.

LOL
I’m too old. :)
“Cruises are not that expensive.”

It depends on a number of things — time of year, destination, type of cabin, its location on the ship (outside or inside, top floor or lower deck) and so on. If you go to the Carribean during hurricane season, you might get a really good deal, but the downside is that you might also be evacuated or rerouted if a hurricane hits. Still, I have known some people who have cruised the Carribean during hurricane season and ran into no problems. You can often get some really good last-minute deals which are great if you can pick up and go at a moment’s notice. And you can get a good deal on airline rates from your home to the port.
And particularly if you’re going to do a long cruise — more than a couple of days — they are a bargain in many respects. For example, I love Aruba, but if I were to just fly down there and get a hotel, it would probably cost me more in the long run than if I did a cruise, and with a cruise, I’d get to see some other islands for the same price. The best way to travel, IMHO.
You’re right. There are a lot of places in the U.S. I haven’t been and hope to get there before I depart this earth.
And I don’t mind traveling through Europe and other countries. I wouldn’t want to live in any of them, but for a visit, many are fine.
True story: Before reserving that Mediterranean cruise, I hesitated because I had the impression that Spain would be something like Mexico. Back then, Mexico already had the reputation for being a hellhole, and I thought if Spain was anything like Mexico, I wasn’t sure I would like Barcelona. A good friend of mine who had been stationed in Germany with the Army many years ago set me straight. He had the opportunity while serving over there to spend some leaves in different European countries, including much of Spain. He said I would love Spain, that there is a big difference between Spain and Mexico. He was right.
There go our plans for quickie cruises out of SD.
I know who coined it. Just a feeble attempt at humor.
Money well spent. /s
It looks like it went over my feeble head!
Sorry!
In Mexico — Ajijic/Lake Chapala, beautiful and safe.
Navy showed me the world back in the late 80s and early 90s.
First Gulf war ended my desire for travel, but I’m glad I
got to go when it was a nicer world.
Well said!
Nah. Thanks for the chat...
There are so many places in this world I’d love to visit and experience.
Trans siberian railway, Great wall, Spinx, etc.
But though I’ve been to 49 of these United States, there are still way too many places I’ve not seen here yet.
Also I’ve been to 38 foreign countries but there ain’t no place like home.
Hope your heart is doing well
...the $5,000 that you pay for the cruise...
Why travel to Mexico?
The U.S.A. is full of beautiful, fun, marvelous things to see and do.
"Hey, this wasn't mentioned in the brochure!"
As a kid the folks would take us to Mazatlan. Had great times there.
NOw they are beheading folks in Acapulco and other seemingly benign areas.
NO thanks.
My only Mediterranean cruise was provided by my uncle. He not only paid my way he actually paid me a stipend for going!
He did insist that I help maintain the radio equipment while we were at sea though.
