YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) — Heavy snow on Half Dome has also prevented crews from placing cables on the mountain. The cables are used by hikers to help them climb to the summit. Park officials say it’s unlikely the cables will be in place by Memorial Day.
Yep. Temps in my area have been consistently 5 to 7 degrees below normal. Guess that issue’s been taken care of & we can stop spending money on it!
Usually, by this time of year, I’m out picking free-range asparagus.
Checked my fave spot yesterday and it is barely peeking through.
But it is supposed to freeze hard tonight.
No use even trying for at least another week, if it stops freezing, that is.
We were in YOSEMITE on Memorial Day weekend, 2006. What a fabulous place...
Memorial Day weekend is the traditional opening for state route 120 into Yosemite from the eastern side of the Sierra. I know it is going to be much later this year.
If this glo-bull warming continues, we’re all going to freeze to death.

It is pretty rare for it to open by Memorial Day. That is the usual day for them to try for, but it only happens about 20% of the time if that.
I was just up in the Valley to see the great waterfalls this year. I am hoping to go back again next weekend. Rumor around here is that Yosemite Valley will start flooding in within the next week or so depending on the temps.

In fact the Sierras have 160% above normal snowfall this year. That has finally shut the mouths of the perpetual drought dooms day fanatics.

Wife and I visited last summer. Beautful scenery, but I wouldn’t object at all to them blasting a tunnel through the mountains to avoid going over the mountains to get into the valley.
So which big city do you live in?
I live out in the country next to a farm. I hate driving mountain roads, and I’ve driven a lot of them in the last ten years. In 2010, the wife and I visited 14 national parks and a number of national monuments...all out west. I had no idea the amount of time it would take us to get over Tioga Pass and into the valley. Getting out the west side was also a nightmare with frequent stops for road repair.
I live just outside the park. I’m not a fan of those that want to destroy the beauty of Yosemite for convience sake.
I hike the Nevada Vernal mist trail every summer. A few years back I had stopped for a breather on the trail while enjoying the view of the Falls. As a 12 yo boy walked past me, he tossed a water bottle down into the canyon below us. I almost tossed him into the canyon to go get it. I asked him if he consider the river his trashcan. The boy’s father heard me asking his son, and was thankfully upset at his son for his action.
We get people that move up into the mountains and want to get rid of the wildlife, cut down all the trees, cement large areas, and put up huge mercury vapor lights. They need to go back to the big city where they belong. I heard a local suggest that they should continue Freeway 41 all the way into the Valley. No thank you. That would destroy it.
