Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales chided fellow Republicans on immigration, urging them to work toward comprehensive immigration reform.
Gonzales, the first Hispanic attorney general of the U.S., said it was a "failure" by both parties to have not achieved immigration reform yet, and warned against a proposal favored by some Republicans to amend the U.S. Constitution to deny birthright citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants.
"My recommendation not just to the Republican Party but also the Democratic Party is that this country, our federal leaders need to pass comprehensive immigration reform," Gonzales said Sunday on Univision's "Al Punto" program. "Their failure, and it is a failure, has led to state governments taking action by passing state laws and we are going to have a patchwork network, of state laws governing immigration."
President George W. Bush sought a comprehensive immigration reform bill during his time in office, when Gonzales was attorney general, that would have given illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship. But conservatives in Congress balked at the proposal, which the administration was forced to eventually withdraw.
Gonzales said it was especially important to provide a federal solution to immigration, in part because of the disparate laws emerging on the state level.

I think in military terms it is called a ‘surge’.
My recommendation is that any specific immigration change that is not worth passing on its own is not worth including in a comprehensive reform. Putting twelve different types of manure into one bill doesn’t make it turn into skittles and a pony for everyone.
Just when you hoped you had heard the last of the Bushes.
Hey, Al, feel free to move to Meh-hee-coh is you don’t like the way we do things here. We can do without your lectures.
And take your patron, Jorge, with you.
Spit*
Not no, but HELL NO! Do it at your peril, GOP. I have never, repeat never, voted for a Democrat in any election at any level.
Let "Immigration Reform" pass and I will NEVER vote GOP again. Not a threat, a solemn promise.
I’d like to “chide” this gonzales fellow for not emigrating to mexico, the country he loves.
FU traitor... you love mexico al... fu al... move there.
LLS
Alberto Gonzales, ah yes, you're the guy who resigned in disgrace as Attorney General after BOTH parties said you were a lying weasel and your tenure was a total failure. And yet you're lecturing OTHER people about failure??
We don’t need immigration reform. We need our immigration laws enforced.
Gonzales is just another in a long line of latino activists for whom ethnicity trumps all (well, THEIR ethnicity, anyway).
Hispanics are so big on their Hispanic culture. Well I prefer the European cultures that have dominated the United States. English, Irish, Italian, Scottish, Polish, German, Czech, Jewish etc. Unfortunately the open borders traitors in Washington DC have sold out traditional European derived America. So now anything goes. In the last 40 years our legal immigration has been 85% from the third world. This is due to the Immigration Act of 1965. This is not even counting illegal immigration
That cynical proposal was made by none other than Sen Grahamnesty on a Sunday news show intended to kill the whole idea.
The US constitution doesn't make children of illegals US citizens, the government does that. We DONT give US citizenship to children of diplomats and we don't have to give it to illegals.
Grahamnesty threw out that constitutional amendment idea that he knew had NO chance of success so he could whip up the liberal pro-amnesty forces with it. He is one politician I despise. He really is on the other side.
We are up against the sumbitches from both sides of the isle doing their utmost to destroy this country by allowing the worlds dumbasses/demorats into our country. There will come a time when we and our children will all pay dearly for this.
Yeseree!
Ping!
Gonzales should STFU
We did work towards “comprehensive” immigration reform - in 1986. The government screwed us. Now they want us to bend over again telling us it was obvious we didn’t enjoy it enough the first time around.
We take you cone-tree, gringo.
His own Mexicans aren't good enough for him. Both of his wives have been Anglo. Diane Clemens and Rebecca Turner.
If Mexican-American wives aren't good enough for him (he must be racist) then why is legalizing Mexican invaders good enough for America?
Google has photos of Alberto and wife who is a bit taller than him
