Osama bin Laden mission agreed in secret 10 years ago by US and Pakistan
US forces were given permission to conduct unilateral raid inside Pakistan if they knew where Bin Laden was hiding, officials say.
The US and Pakistan struck a secret deal almost a decade ago permitting a US operation against Osama bin Laden on Pakistani soil similar to last week's raid that killed the al-Qaida leader, the Guardian has learned.
The deal was struck between the military leader General Pervez Musharraf and President George Bush after Bin Laden escaped US forces in the mountains of Tora Bora in late 2001, according to serving and retired Pakistani and US officials.
Under its terms, Pakistan would allow US forces to conduct a unilateral raid inside Pakistan in search of Bin Laden, his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and the al-Qaida No3. Afterwards, both sides agreed, Pakistan would vociferously protest the incursion.
"There was an agreement between Bush and Musharraf that if we knew where Osama was, we were going to come and get him," said a former senior US official with knowledge of counterterrorism operations. "The Pakistanis would put up a hue and cry, but they wouldn't stop us."
The deal puts a new complexion on the political storm triggered by Bin Laden's death in Abbottabad, 35 miles north of Islamabad, where a team of US navy Seals assaulted his safe house in the early hours of 2 May.

HEY! They forgot to mention that it was approved back then by then-community organizer barry obama. He was in on all the planning and even hand-picked the team and told them to wait until he was POTUS and needed a quick ratings hit.
We ALL know this was 100% “me-I-myself-me-my-me” obama!
I suspected this was true in the minutes since the raid became public. It is unfathomable that both the GWB administration and Obama’s would not have made it crystal clear that we would be coming in to their territory if we knew where any of these bastards were located. We established the moral and ethical argument with the Bush Doctrine and subsequent policies all the way up to this year. Both administrations were willing to do drone attacks into their territory which is just as much a violation. It also made sense that Pakistan would be full of piss and vinegar publicly when we did, but that they would have to do it to maintain order in their political reality. It only makes sense.
The Idea that Bin Laden has been “held” for us is one of the feasible theories I’ve been considering.
Some folks don’t like the idea that Bush would be involved in something like this but it certainly wouldn’t be an unprecedented move and I have a feeling that it might have been the wise move to make.
Lets hope that Obama hasn’t really screwed us in his attempt to prop up sagging poll numbers and ego.
Pakistan already got the $$$$ ... which was our part of the bargain. NOW they are compalining?
bttt
I’d go a step further and say that individuals with either Al Qada or the Pakistani military freely gave the hard information that permitted the raid to go forward. I don’t see the US sending SpecOps teams that far into a country that we’re not a war with on a “maybe”.
You mean Barry “Pahkey-Stahn” Obama???
I knew it, Bush’s fault.
“Pakistan already got the $$$$ ... which was our part of the bargain. NOW they are compalining?”
Complaining was part of the deal, too.
