Florida Bill Would Prohibit Doctors From Asking Patients About Their Guns

With a stroke of the governor's pen, Florida is positioned to become the first state in the nation to prohibit physicians from asking patients if they have guns in their homes, a move some doctors say will interfere with health care.

The Florida Senate passed House Bill 155 last month by a 27-10 vote and the measure now awaits the signature of Republican Gov. Rick Scott. If signed, it would ban doctors from asking about the presence of guns or ammunition in the home.

Republican State Rep. Jason Brodeur, a sponsor of the bill, proposed the legislation following an incident in which a Florida pediatrician told a mother to find another doctor when she refused to answer questions about guns in her home.

Supporters of the legislation, including the National Rifle Association, say they're seeking to stop doctors from invading their privacy. Critics of the bill, however, claim that doctors need to ask patients about guns to ensure their safety and to make sure they remain out of the reach of children.

Don’t know whether this is a step forward or not. I engage in a healthy debate with my doc each year at my annual physical when he asks me these questions.

I can kind of see the rationale of asking, but it is the responsiblity of the parents, not the pediatrician, to ensure that all weapons be stored securely in the home and ammunition stored separately.

When I was growing up one of my best friends had another of our friends over to play. They found their Dad’s pistol in his night stand and while playing around with it, he fatally shot his friend. It was tragic and his father never got over it.

From that day on my Dad locked up all the ammunition for his rifles and only he knew where the key was. When we went out shooting, he took it out and when we got home it was once again locked up.

It is absolutely tragic, the number of guns that have been rusted to bits or lost in floods and on cruises over the last 5 years alone. I tell you, it is a crying shame.

I'm as pro gun as anybody but I don't want anybody in any legislature passing bills that tell anyone what they can or cannot say.

You have a point but the anti-gunners are using doctors as a back door method of gun control.

Absolutely! Not to mention why would anyone volunteer Constitutionally protected information to some wet behind the ears kid doctor. I can not imagine any Dr. asking such an off the wall question, then again its the gals that tote the rug-rat to the Dr.

Our children were instructed if asked by a doctor about guns in the home to refer the questioner to their parents. We would have told the busybody that it was none of their business and changed doctors.

Insanity. Plain insanity.

“Do you where a helmet when you ride your bike?”

Makes me glad I don’t have kids that might give anything away.

“Has anyone ever had a doctor ask if they had any plastic bags laying around or mini blinds with cords hanging down to the floor?”

No. And if my MD did, I’d tell him I’m not into men or S&M.

This is some scary sh*t.

Not in the least. I challenge him, and he challenges me. Nobody ever wins, but we both look forward to next year. I think I win because it makes him less likely to just blindly ask the questions to other patients. My wife sees him too, and he always laughs and says “I hope you aren’t going to jump on me like your husband does.”

I suppose it might be a legitimate inquiry of a doctor if the patient presented with a rash and the physician suspected an allergy to gun powder.

But outside of that, what would be the point?

A doctor can advise a patient on oxygen to stay away from open flames and sparks including gunfire without asking if he actually owns one.

“You have a point but the anti-gunners are using doctors as a back door method of gun control”

Then why doesn't the pro gun lobby just start asking legislatures to pass laws require a test to legalize adulthood. If you are a responsible gun owner than I trust you enough to tell the doctor to go to hell.

Geez folks there are enough laws ..
