Florida Bill Would Prohibit Doctors From Asking Patients About Their Guns

With a stroke of the governor's pen, Florida is positioned to become the first state in the nation to prohibit physicians from asking patients if they have guns in their homes, a move some doctors say will interfere with health care.

The Florida Senate passed House Bill 155 last month by a 27-10 vote and the measure now awaits the signature of Republican Gov. Rick Scott. If signed, it would ban doctors from asking about the presence of guns or ammunition in the home.

Republican State Rep. Jason Brodeur, a sponsor of the bill, proposed the legislation following an incident in which a Florida pediatrician told a mother to find another doctor when she refused to answer questions about guns in her home.

Supporters of the legislation, including the National Rifle Association, say they're seeking to stop doctors from invading their privacy. Critics of the bill, however, claim that doctors need to ask patients about guns to ensure their safety and to make sure they remain out of the reach of children.

I often ask my patients about their firearms... after I tell them about MINE! But then I live in northern Idaho where the majority of people still behave like AMERICANS.

Screw the libs!

Of course, if I ever was, I'd answer “no”. But I've never been asked.

I've never been asked either, but if I was, my answer would be "It's none of your damn business and why are you asking me this question? GTH outa here and send in a different doctor"...

...or something like that! I might even want to follow up with an embarrassing personal question to Mr or Ms. Doctor!

Yeah...I’d resist answering, rather harshly.

I like your idea about a “follow up with an embarrassing personal question to Mr or Ms. Doctor!”

Throw it back at ‘em!

That nurse was WAY out of line.

You should have told the nurse, “Just because you’re a slut who does it with any guy who has two legs, it doesn’t mean my daughter is like you. She has both morals and self-respect, as well as decency.”

Well, we have different doctors and mine asks if there is anything he needs to know about the blood screens. I say yes, I use salt and get in about 3mi a day.

I would start asking questions about their sex life. If they ever took a penis up their anus. Did they poop a little when it finally came out?

I think that would shut them up real quick. And I’d never go back to them.

If you embarrass these kinds of people in this manner (they are not expecting it) it will throw them off their game and they will understand exaclty the message you just told them. Don’t ask weird questions you have no right to ask.

So what?
Being an adult taking care of my family requires taking kids to pediatricians, who all ask the same intrusive irrelevant question; the option amounts to “don’t answer” vs. “don’t take the kids to the doctor”. Sometimes we, as a society voting for and operating through constitutional representatives, have to tell industry providers “cut that stupid $#!^ out”.

Government has a legitimate place in society. ...or are you a closet anarchist?

Closet anarchist..

Thanks for the morning laugh I needed it.

Unfortunately I find it sad that so many supposed conservatives only want smaller less intrusive government when its the other guys definition of government intrusion they don't like.

If getting government out of peoples lives and expecting everyone to be adults is your definition of an anarchist I suspect you have wandered onto the wrong forum..

The absence of government is anarchy.
If you’re not an anarchist, then you admit there is a role of government in people’s lives.
Ending tacit abusive collusion in an industry via a “don’t do that” slap on the wrist is a legitimate role of government.

The role of government is to stay out of peoples lives as much as possible. I believe in that old once conservative notion that the people have the right to be left alone..

“wow..... reason 10098 why I’m glad I’m in Texas.”

The only doctor who asked me that question was in Texas. Actually it was his PA. I answered “None of your business” .

She said, “I’ll just take that as a yes” and wrote down yes.

I mentioned that yes was not my answer and if the subject came up elsewhere my lawyers would be on her like jackals.

Scared her. I immediately got a new doctor. I will not put up with this crap.

So...anarchy then? That keeps government out of peoples lives as much as possible.

You’re kind of avoiding the question of what involvement there should be.

The USA survived up until the 1960’s with far far less government intrusion into peoples lives than today. If that is how you define anarchy then fine lets go back to that.

Never has and never will. One would hope that folks on FR would know better that to cheer this kind of crap but there are far too many knee jerkers even here.

Just as you don't cut the deficit by adding more and more spending you dont get less government intrusion into peoples lives by having legislators of both parties passing more and more laws.

I'm frankly baffled so many self described conservatives cant make that basic distinction...

You’re arguing for NO intrusion - to wit, no government, i.e. anarchy.

Still waiting for any statement of what government’s purpose is besides not existing.
...naw, cancel that. Not interested in the answer any more. If you can’t give a straight answer to a reasonable question without several repetitions thereof, why bother.
