Obama Defends Pro-Cop-Killer, Burn Pres. Bush Rapper Appearance at White House
Wednesday, May 11, 2011 | Kristinn

CBS News Radio White House Correspondent Mark Knoller via Twitter:

WH says Pres Obama opposes violent & misogynist lyrics, but defends participation of rapper known as Common in WH poetry event tonight.

WH says some criticism of Common is distorted and lyrics suggesting a threat against police are not the sum total of his work.

Hitler’s attempt at exterminating the Jews wasn’t his total work either. He did turn the country around economically and built them better roads... /sarcasm

What does the Bummer think of the truth or falsity of Common’s claims? That would be more interesting to me than his views on rap as a genre.

More from ABC's Jake Tapper:

“The president does not support and opposes the kind of lyrics that has been written about,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said when American Urban Radio’s April Ryan asked him about the controversy.

Carney said the president has “in the past spoken very forcefully out against violent and misogynistic lyrics.”

But while the president opposes those lyrics, Carney said, “he does not think that that is the sum total of this particular artist’s work which has been recognized by a lot of mainstream organizations and ‘fair and balanced’ organizations like Fox News, which described his music as positive.”

“One of the things the president appreciates is the work Mr. Lynn has done with children, especially trying to get them to focus on poetry as opposed to some of the negative influences of life on the streets,” Carney said.

Common, he said, is a “multi-Grammy award winning artist…invited to this event about poetry, partly because of his efforts to bring poetry to audiences that don’t get to experience it. And we think that’s a positive thing.”

“Defending” the indefensible.

Well, directing the flight of planes into high rises was not the sum of bin Laden’s work, either.

Anti-semitical rants aren’t the sum of Mel Gibson’s work.

I heard Hitler treated Eva Braun nicely.

Charlie Sheen does not just promote drug abuse. It’s not the sum total of his work.

Good grief, what “logic.” I guess it started with “Rev.” Wright. Hating white people and the USA was not the sum total of his work, either.

In that case everything is peachy.

What a racist thug our President is. He is in fact WORSE than Common. Common is doing this for himself and his own bottom line. He has no contractual obligation to anyone else. The President is supposed to stand for ALL of us. This guy (Obama) is the worst this country has to offer.

What does he think about the claims?

“The Cambridge police acted stupidly...”

(Before admittedly knowing the facts of that case)

You can tell that his polling numbers must really be slipping with black voters. Otherwise he would not take this kind of risk in order to establish his street cred.

Threatening police is not the 'sum total of his work???'

We are truly living in the Twilight Zone.

Tell you what, Mr. President. If you think that this performer should be given a forum in the White House, why don’t you show us by reading the complete lyrics of one of his songs?
I am sure that TOTUS could handle the job!

Word. Black unemployment up 35% under Obama at 15%. Black youth unemployment at 50%. Gotta distract while calling for amnesty for job stealing illegals.
