Wednesday, May 11, 2011 | Kristinn

CBS News Radio White House Correspondent Mark Knoller via Twitter:

WH says Pres Obama opposes violent & misogynist lyrics, but defends participation of rapper known as Common in WH poetry event tonight.

WH says some criticism of Common is distorted and lyrics suggesting a threat against police are not the sum total of his work.

Maybe he’ll pardon Mumia and invite him to the White House for a beer.

Referring to “concerns by some law enforcement,” Carney said that “the president’s record of support for law enforcement is extremely strong.”

David Jones, the president of the New Jersey State Troopers Fraternal Association, voiced concern to the White House and to ABC News about Common’s invitation given Common’s song extolling Joanne Chesmard, a member of the Black Liberation Army, convicted in 1977 of the first degree murder of a state trooper and sentenced to life in prison. In November 1979, Chesmard escaped from prison.

That said, the White House press secretary suggested that some of the media coverage of this controversy has not be fair or accurate.

“While the president doesn’t support the kind of lyrics that have been raised here,” Carney said, “some of these reports distort what Mr. Lynn stands for more broadly,” referring to Common by his given name, Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr. “Within that genre of hip hop and rap he is known as…a conscious rapper.”

"One of the things the president appreciates is the work Mr. Lynn has done with children, especially trying to get them to focus on poetry as opposed to some of the negative influences of life on the streets,” Carney said.

Oh, well...... killing police is just fine as long as the kiddies can recite poetry while they're doing it.....

This gent “Common” hates Italians, Women, Cops, GW Bush, White folks and probably Jewish folks also. He loves Obama, Michelle Obama, the “hate America girl”, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, his Black racist church, Louie Farrakhan, Van Jones and along with Obama, Jones, Farrakhan and Wright, he adores Kaddafi. How’s that for “Hope & Change”, Mr. & Ms. American voters!!!

Assata Olugbala Shakur(born July 16, 1947 as JoAnne Deborah Byron, married name Chesimard is an African-American activist and escaped convict who was a member of the Black Panther Party (BPP) and Black Liberation Army (BLA). Between 1971 and 1973, Shakur was accused of several crimes, of which she would never be charged, and made the subject of a multi-state manhunt.

In May 1973, Shakur was involved in a shootout on the New Jersey Turnpike, during which New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster and BLA member Zayd Malik Shakur were killed and Shakur and Trooper James Harper were wounded. Between 1973 and 1977, Shakur was indicted in relation to six other alleged criminal incidents—charged with murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, bank robbery, and kidnapping—resulting in three acquittals and three dismissals. In 1977, she was convicted of the first-degree murder of Foerster and of seven other felonies related to the shootout.

Shakur was then incarcerated in several prisons, where her treatment drew criticism from some human rights groups. She escaped from prison in 1979 and has been living in Cuba in political asylum since 1984. Since May 2, 2005, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has classified her as a “domestic terrorist” and offered a $1 million reward for assistance in her capture. Attempts to extradite her have resulted in letters to the Pope and a Congressional resolution. Shakur is the step-aunt of the deceased hip hop icon Tupac Shakur (the sister of his stepfather, Mutulu Shakur). Her life has been portrayed in literature, film, and song.

After graduation from CCNY at the age of 23, Shakur became involved in the Black Panther Party (BPP), eventually becoming a leading member of the Harlem branch.

In 1970 she changed her name to Assata Shakur and joined the Black Liberation Army (BLA), “a politico-military organization, whose primary objective (was) to fight for the independence and self-determination of Afrikan people in the United States.” In 1971, Shakur joined the Republic of New Afrika, an organization formed to create an independent black majority nation composed of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.

In 1972, Shakur was the subject of a nationwide manhunt after the FBI alleged that she was the “revolutionary mother hen” of a Black Liberation Army cell that had conducted a “series of cold-blooded murders of New York City police officers”, including the “execution style murders” of New York Police Officers Joseph Piagentini and Waverly Jones on May 21, 1971 and Gregory Foster and Rocco Laurie on January 28, 1972.

Between 1973 and 1977, in New York and New Jersey, Shakur was indicted ten times, resulting in seven different criminal trials. Shakur was charged with two bank robberies, the kidnapping of a Brooklyn heroin dealer, attempted murder of two Queens police officers stemming from a January 23, 1973 failed ambush, and eight other felonies related to the Turnpike shootout.

Hey,

I've been wondering what happened to all the gang bangers and welfare cheats when the Robert Taylor homes were torn down and the West Side cleaned up.

It seems they all went to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

And did you guys see the other trash racist bitch he invited? She "winced" when a "brother" married a white woman, oh and bitched and moaned about slavery.

This is what I wrote on the comment thread, "How many Federal soldiers died to free the slaves you racist bitch?"

This is the most racist, vile, disgusting Administration in the entire HISTORY of the United States.

For New Jersey police, the outrage centers on “A Song for Assata” lyrics like “Your power and pride is beautiful. May God bless your soul.” Shakur, formerly known as Joanne Chesimard, was convicted for the 1973 slaying of Trooper Werner Foerster on the New Jersey Turnpike. She escaped prison in 1979, and is living in asylum in Cuba.

“The young people who read this stuff, hear this stuff, are getting a very dangerous and deadly message,” said David Jones, president of the State Troopers Fraternal Association union. Source: NBC New York

Common A Song For Assata Lyrics

F/ cee-lo

(common)
In the spirit of god.
In the spirit of the ancestors.
In the spirit of the black panthers.
In the spirit of assata shakur.
We make this movement towards freedom
For all those who have been oppressed, and all those in the struggle.
Yeah. yo, check it-

There were lights and sirens, gunshots firin
Cover your eyes as I describe a scene so violent
Seemed like a bad dream, she laid in a blood puddle
Blood bubbled in her chest, cold air brushed against open flesh
No room to rest, pain consumed each breath
Shot twice wit her hands up
Police questioned but shot before she answered
One panther lost his life, the other ran for his
Scandalous the police were as they kicked and beat her
Comprehension she was beyond, tryna hold on
To life. she thought she’d live with no arm
That’s what it felt like, got to the hospital, eyes held tight
They moved her room to room-she could tell by the light
Handcuffed tight to the bed, through her skin it bit
Put guns to her head, every word she got hit
‘who shot the trooper? ‘ they asked her
Put mace in her eyes, threatened to blast her
Her mind raced till things got still
Opened her eyes, realized she’s next to her best friend who got killed
She got chills, they told her: that’s where she would be next
Hurt mixed wit anger-survival was a reflex
They lied and denied visits from her lawyer
But she was buildin as they tried to destroy her
If it wasn’t for this german nurse they woulda served her worse
I read this sister’s story, knew that it deserved a verse
I wonder what would happen if that woulda been me?
All this shit so we could be free, so dig it, y’all.

(cee-lo vocals)
I’m thinkin’ of assata, yes.
Listen to my love, assata, yes.
Your power and pride is beautiful.
May God bless your soul.

(common)
It seemed like the middle of the night when the law awakened her
Walkie-talkies cracklin, I see ‘em when they takin her
Though she kinda knew,
What made the ride peaceful was the trees and the sky was blue
Arrived to middlesex prison about six inna morning
Uneasy as they pushed her to the second floor in
A cell, one cot, no window, facing hell.
Put in the basement of a prison wit all males
And the smell of misery, seatless toilets and centipedes
She’d exercise, (paint? ,) and begin to read
Two years inna hole. her soul grew weak
Away from people so long she forgot how to speak
She discovered frredom is a unspoken sound
And a wall is a wall and can be broken down
Found peace in the panthers she went on trial with
One of the brothers she had a child with
The foulness they would feed her, hopin she’s lose her seed
Held tight, knowing the fight would live through this seed
In need of a doctor, from her stomach she’s bleed
Out of this situation a girl was conceived
Separated from her, left to mother the revolution
And lactated to attack hate

Cause federal and state was built for a black fate

Her emptiness was filled with beatings and court dates
They fabricated cases, hoping one would stick

And said she robbed places that didn’t exist

In the midst of threats on her life and being caged with aryan whites

Through dark halls of hate she carried the light
I wonder what would happen if that woulda been me?
All of this shit so we could be free.
Yeah, I often wonder what would happen if that woulda been me?
All of this shit so we could be free, so dig it, people-

(cee-lo)
I’m thinkin’ of assata, yeah.
Listen to my love, assata, yeah.
Your power and pride, so beautiful...
May God bless your soul.
Oooh.

(common)
Yo
From north carolina her grandmother would bring
News that she had had a dream
Her dreams always meant what they needed them to mean
What made them real was the action in between
She dreamt that assata was free in they old house in queens
The fact that they always came true was the thing
Assata had been convicted of a murder she couldna done
Medical evidence shown she couldna shot the gun
It’s time for her to see the sun from the other side
Time for her daughter to be by her mother’s side
Time for this beautiful woman to become soft again
Time for her to breathe, and not be told how or when
She untangled the chains and escaped the pain
How she broke out of prison I could never explain
And even to this day they try to get to her
But she’s free with political asylum in cuba.

(cee-lo vocals)
I’m thinkin’ of assata, yeah.
Listen to my love, assata, yeah.
We’re molded from the same mud, assata.
We share the same blood, assata, yeah.
Your power and pride, so beautiful...
May God bless your soul.
Your power and pride, so beautiful...
May God bless your soul.
Oooh.

(assata)
Freedom! you askin me about freedom. askin me about freedom?
I’ll be honest with you. I know a whole more about what freedom isn’t
Than about what it is, cause I’ve never been free.
I can only share my vision with you of the future, about what freedom is.

Uhh, the way I see it, freedom is— is the right to grow, is the right to
Blossom.

Freedom is -is the right to be yourself, to be who you are,
To be who you wanna be, to do what you wanna do. (fade out)

Trump and tea party are racist

One for just asking for a birth certificate the other just made up from whole cloth.

Next time I hear it and I will bring this guy up for being INVITED to the White House.

If they claim he didn't like Bush for Oil in Iraq well we got this problem with Libya for Oil and not Syria which has no Oil but murdering its own people.

fat arse has used the white house like a concert hall and entertainment room for her classless, inner city goons and thugs.

Nearly every night she has entertainment, concerts etc and I don’t even want to think what the audience looks like but I bet it resembles a Chicago community center

Can you all imagine when they leave the white house and how much will be stolen and the mess it will be in.

I just hope that who ever gets power next throws all these bums out, changes staff and give those jobs who deserve them based on credit not because they’re from Chicago.
And then investigate who stole what, release the flight manifest of the fly over of NY City and show us what parties were going on etc

I see FOX is clearly the culprit again for reporting and are the other channels reporting or they have no problem with a racist seeing a racist in a building which has housed great men.

This is sick and I am sick to the stomach that this admin is racist and gets away with it and I can’t even write on here what I think of them
