Trains to Detroit will be faster, have more room with high(er) speed rail money Florida rejected
Medill Reports ^ | 5-12-11 | Austin B. Smith

One of the projects to be funded with the money Florida rejected will be to transform 135 miles of Amtrak’s Wolverine route, which runs between Chicago and Detroit, into a higher-speed rail line, according to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

This improvement, which will cost $196.5 million, will be paid for by the federal government. Trains will be able to reach speeds up to 110 mph, compared with their current top speed of 79 mph. The trip, which currently takes more than 5 hours, is expected to be more than 30 minutes shorter.

“This is not true high-speed rail by traditional definition, but it is improved,” said Megan Owens, executive director of Transit Riders United. She said a true high-speed rail, such as the one being proposed on the Los Angeles-San Francisco corridor, is far more costly.

Owens said she views the money as an investment. “Doing this now is worthwhile and will be a very substantial improvement in travel and [true high-speed is] not realistic at this point in the foreseeable future.”

I can see people wanting to ride a speedy train OUT of Detroit, but who would want to ride into it?

Yeah that was what I was thinking - go from one hell to the other much more quickly.

So we (you and I and other productive members of society) are going to spend $200M (I almost GUARANTEE the costs are more than that) so that Amtrak riders between Detroit and Chicago (have we narrowed this down enough yet) can make their trip THIRTY WHOLE MINUTES FASTER!!??

Wow

Yeah, it’s not even “high speed” rail, just a little faster than now.

196 Million of OUR money so that the 5 hr. trip from Chicago to Detroit will be a HALF HOUR shorter?

This is ALL about union jobs.

We here in Florida are proud to reject the money for Obamacare and the high speed train. We won’t miss it.

I saw an interview with that idiot Ray LaHood on CNBC. Even the folks there were snarking at the idea that anybody outside the NE corridor would even think of riding trains.

When asked about LameTrack losing money for 19 of the last 20 years, LaHood replied he’s only looking at the future.

Gonna be quite some magic trick considering the fact that the bulk of freight into and out of Detroit (and beyond) uses that route.

You stole my thought. Who in their right mind would want to go to Detroit? It looks like they’re determined to spend 200 million on SOMETHING so let’s pick Detroit. This is your federal government in action. I would look at this and say, there’s no demand for it and we can SAVE 200 million by NOT building this. Did this ever cross their minds? I doubt it.
