George Mitchell is leaving his job as Mideast envoy by telling President Obama in a letter that he supports his "vision of comprehensive peace in the Middle East."

In a statement, Obama said Mitchell has "contributed immeasurably" to bringing about a two-state solution between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

David Hale, Mitchell's deputy, will fill the role as an acting envoy when Mitchell leaves on May 20.

Obama's full statement:

"Over the past two and a half years, George Mitchell has worked as a tireless advocate for peace as the U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East. His deep commitment to resolving conflict and advancing democracy has contributed immeasurably to the goal of two states living side by side in peace and security.

Barry is right about that. There is no progress to be measured. Another back-handed slam by Obomba, and another person thrown under the bus.

Mitchell has been horribly tilted against Israel due to obvious conflicts of financial interests, and the fact that he was always biased in favor of the Islamic positions and arguments. Good riddance!

Running for home. He’s afraid of the long knives. He should reap what he has helped sow.

I don’t know. I’m real suspicious here. Obama’s big Mid-East speech is May 19th, and Mitchell is departing from his position on May 20th. Unusual timing, it seems to me. If it is because Mitchelll is frustrated by getting nowhere in the Middle East, then what is Obama’s speech going to be about on May 19th? Is Obama going to state that he will support a Palestinian state in the Fall, along w/the U.N.? Is Mitchell quitting right now so that he won’t have to take the heat for this by leaving before the fall when it actually happens? Is this the final piece of advice that Mitchell has given Obama, to go along w/declaring Palestine a State, and then he gets the h*ll out of his position in order to leave no fingerprints on his final plan for Israel? I smell something rotten in Denmark with the timing of Mitchell’s departure one day after Obama gives his big middle east speech.

The only other reason I could see for this timing would be if Obama is selling out Mitchell by not going along w/declaring Palestinian statehood in the fall, against the wishes of the U.N., but sure to please the U.S. population at large and thus increase Obama’s chances of winning re-election, as he moves to the middle of the road. Obama would sell out his own mama to get re-elected, so this too is a possibility. Mitchell could be quitting his post in disgust. We will know more next week when Obama gives his big Mid East speech.
