Latino leaders who went to bat for Jerry Brown in last year's campaign are now counting on the governor to help them pass bills supporting farmworkers and illegal immigrants.
Latino census growth, the pending redrawing of political districts and the election of a Democrat for the state's top office create a confluence of opportunity not seen in years, activists say.
"We are turning back the ugliness of a previous period, piece by piece," Nativo Lopez of the Mexican American Political Association said of the 1990s, when voters approved a ban on public benefits to illegal immigrants that later was deemed unconstitutional.
The latest action on a Latino bill came Thursday, when the Assembly passed a measure inspired by Pedro Ramirez, student body president at Fresno State University, that would allow undocumented immigrants to receive a stipend, grant or scholarship for serving in student government at a state university or community college.
Among the other bills in the Legislature:
AB 131 would allow illegal immigrants who pay in-state tuition to apply for Cal Grants and other public aid for college.
AB 1389 would bar police from impounding cars at sobriety checkpoints solely because a driver is unlicensed, an action that hits undocumented immigrants hard because they cannot obtain driver's licenses.
AB 1081 would allow counties to withdraw from a federal program that runs fingerprints of arrestees through a database to identify illegal immigrants.
Senate Bill 104 would provide an alternative to secret-ballot elections by allowing farmworkers to obtain union representation if a majority of employees sign petition cards.
AB 889 would give nannies, housekeepers and other domestic workers the right to overtime pay, vacation, meal breaks and other job benefits.

I actually agree somewhat with the bill regarding payment for nannies. Such a requirement will raise the price of illegal labor to where legal labor can better compete with it. Other than that, I wish we’d deport these SOBs back to where they came from.
Cut to the chase, save the money and get rid of licensing in it's entirety. It only hurt illegals anyway.
Goodbye sweet America.
Goodbye Mexifornia...hello Georgia!!!
Governor signs Arizona-style immigration bill into law
http://www.ajc.com/news/georgia-politics-elections/governor-signs-arizona-style-944703.html
the state of california is closing some state parks
depriving tax payers.
meanwhile, the state provides services for illegals.
Wake up people - you left Mexico for a reason.
As you destroy California more and more taxpayers & business will leave the state. These are the people paying the bills. Right now it is a trickle, but with 10,000 people a day retiring; that trickle will turn into a stream. Since the top 10% of the population pays 90% of the taxes; you will find yourself in financial ruin by the end of Moombeam’s term. As a side note: The rest of the nation watches California! If it is crushed by illegal immigration; you will see real discrimination (not perceived or imaginary like people are whining about now) show up across the nation.
CA has already been crushed by illegal immigration with the help of liberalism, the federal government and our judiciary.
We’re just trying to re-arrange the deck chairs and get a different tune for the band to play.
No one’s willing to admit it or do anything about it.
WAKE UP AMERICA! They’re coming for you next!
The left believes it will be better able to tax these individuals or otherwise get them to pay in the system, not to mention eventually voting for them,if they get some kind of legal recognition.Somebody’s got to cover these pensions and programs.
Our only hope is that other states stand up and close the door, regardless of what the feds say.
I've often wondered why, in certain parts of California, that people who own $1 mil houses, which are actually rather small by many people's standards, don't just sell and move to other parts of the country when they retire, where that same $1 mil will buy a beautiful large home, with acreage.
By the way, even mobile homes within walking distance to the ocean are selling for $1 mil plus in California.
Is the climate and beach really worth that much?
Ping!
“>>AB 889 would give nannies, housekeepers and other domestic workers the right to overtime pay, vacation, meal breaks and other job benefits.”
Hey everybody. What’s all the hubub about? I was a domestic for 15 years. Domestic workers already have all these rights, whether they are legal citizens or not! They are written into current CA law known as Wage Order 15 (except vacation of course, that’s an employment BENEFIT not an employment right) Check it out here... http://www.dir.ca.gov/IWC/IWCArticle15.pdf
AB889 is pretty ridiculous and is pushing the envelope way beyond basic rights, trying to do stuff like make it a law that workers can use their bosses private kitchens to cook whatever they want, or the boss pays them huge fines. [AB889, Chapter 2, Section 1460]
And the list goes on... emotional attachment moves people to action, and that’s why proponents are playing on peoples heartstrings. They are simply misrepresenting the law to get it passed because the cold hard truth will get them nowhere.
