Researchers in Ohio are studying the power of pee

ATHENS, Ohio - Researchers at Ohio University are studying a new energy source you can produce yourself. They’re studying the power of pee.

It’s something everyone does, every day. Even though urine is nearly 99 percent water, there is a lot of hydrogen in the remaining one percent from an organic compound called urea.

To break it down, if you could collect the urine from all 24,000 students at Ohio University, you could power 60 buildings every day.

Researchers say there is still a lot of work to be done, but there are some applications of this new technology that could start paying off for businesses very soon.

Until then, our “number one” power source will just keep going down the drain.

Urine has a lot of nitrates in it. During the Civil War Southern ladies donated theirs to have the nitrate distilled from it to make gunpowder.

I’ve always thought there could be a use for urine. There’s so much of it, and it’s so rich in organic compounds.

The logistics of dealing with it seem impractical though.

In colonial times, the runoff of stables and outhouse were collected. John Adams sent letters to his wife asking the ladies to make gunpowder. I am descended from a woman who was arrested for running guns and ammo during the revolution.

A South African pig farmer, John Fry, used a bio-digester to convert his pig manure into methane gas which he used to fuel his Diesel electric generator. This was back in the 1970’s.

Does this mean that 0bama's EPA will refuse to allow the construction of new breweries?

It's a foundation ingredient for an explosive.

AFRL has demonstrated the ability to make fuel from grass, flowers, biomass—just about anything. They’ve already done it.

"that's why the French call dandelions "Pissenlits." (Pee in bed) I have to gather up my last mess of dandelions today, before I mow the grass. (I don't have a 'lawn'. I have a 'yard.' But I still have to keep the level of the grass down. I'd really like to rent a sheep or a goat and have the yard fertilized at the same time as they 'mow' it.)"

LOL. I was tempted to write the french version, but chickened out. Speaking of chickens, get chickens, they'll mow your lawn right down to the dirt.

I'm also gathering the dandelions. Plan to make some wine, for the first time. Should be an experience. I'm wondering if one can make crabgrass wine.

Don't give TSA any ideas. After the groping we'll have to P in a cup.

crabgrass wine= ahaha. It must be good for SOMEthing, God made so much of it.

But I can tell ya - dandelion wine is some of the finest white wine you'll ever have.

as to chickens - I wish I could have a laying flock. Unfortunately, I ‘inherited’ my son's dog “for a little while” 2 years ago. And his run let's him reach too much of the yard.
