Chris Christie: My opinion on evolution? “None of your business”

I guess that delegation from Iowa can cancel their trip.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says it’s “none of your business” whether he believes in evolution, creationism or intelligent design…

On Thursday morning, at a press conference in Jersey City recognizing the St. Anthony’s High School basketball team, ranked no. 1 in the country, Christie again said it should be a “local decision” whether to teach creationism along with the state-approved curriculum. He said there was no consensus on teaching creationism, whereas evolution is part of the curriculum because there is a consensus.

When I posted this item in Headlines, there was a shocking number of right-ons in the comments from readers who are, I surmise, tired of the Darwin wars. Or maybe they’re impressed with Christie’s boldness in avoiding a trap that all prominent Republicans seem to fall into eventually? In that case, some context about his alleged “boldness”:

For a politician who has built a national reputation for straight talk and not shying from a fight, Christie’s demurral on creationism stands out. In the past, he has said people need not wonder where he stands on an issue.

“When you guys ask me questions, I’m going to answer them directly, straightly, bluntly, and nobody in New Jersey is going to have to wonder where I am on an issue,” he said a year ago, adding: “I think they’ve had enough of politicians who make them wonder … They make them wonder so they got an escape hatch. So they have an escape hatch. And I’m not interested in an escape hatch.”

Turns out he is interested in an escape hatch, at least so long as his name is being kicked around in presidential discussions and he remains a strong contender for VP. Is everyone copacetic with this kicking-of-the-can, then? I’m fine with it only because debates on evolution are the most pointless in America’s political battlescape. Eventually he’ll be a national candidate who’s forced to answer this question in a straightfoward way, and the answer’s bound to irritate many people no matter what it is, but until then, why not be coy? Strike a blow for MYOB!

Good on him! Now the important question is does he believe in a Federal Government involvement in education, AT ALL!

I love this answer... the governor’s beliefs regarding this subject will do nothing to create jobs and fix the economy.

I disagree with Allahpundit on this one. Gov. Christie has answered the question. Curriculum should be decided at the local level and the Governor's personal opinions on the subject are not anyone else's business. That seems to pretty much cover the subject to me. So what's the problem?

I definitely would love to see Christie run, finally a politician that’s not politically tone deaf, like most of the other GOP candidates.

He’s already said it’s a states’ rights issue. What more is to be said that’s relevant for a politician? They may as well ask him if he believes in relativity theory. If they are dumb enough to ask, they are dumb enough to be kept in limbo.

The media asks such stupid ignominious questions.

If he does run and win POTUS, will it really matter what he believes since he is correct that this is a local school issue.

Agreed. And not only that, what is is really saying is something like this:

“I know this is one of your BS trap questions, and I’m not playing your silly little game.......”

Very wise IMO.

Christie’s right; his opinion doesn’t matter. IT IS a local issue, as all education decisions should be. A state’s chief executive should be no more involved in district’s education policies than a U.S. president in a person’s health care.

One of the few biblical roles of a ruler is to commend or praise people who do good. I think he’s doing a fair job of this.

Christie seems to be the real deal. I might not agree with him 100% of the time but I like his style and he is 100% correct here. Education is a local issue!

what he is really saying is something like this:

“I know this is one of your BS trap questions, and I’m not playing your silly little game.......”

Mat 11:16:
But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
Mat 11:17 :
And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
