Buckingham Palace cordoned off as Irish republican dissidents issue London bomb threat

Large parts of central London have been cordoned off after Irish republican dissidents issued a bomb threat, police have disclosed.

1:09PM BST 16 May 2011

Bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion as a security alert closed down the centre of the capital around Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square.

A suitcase was discovered abandoned outside a hotel and was destroyed in a controlled explosion at 9.30am.

It comes a day before the Queen is scheduled to make her first ever visit to the Republic of Ireland.

Security was heightened after a "non-specific" threat was issued to authorities last night.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "A bomb threat warning has been received relating to central London today. The threat is not specific in relation to location or time."

Guess I was wrong in assuming the political passions of the IRA died out.

I had been told that it morphed from its political idealism of 1916 into a gang that engages in turf wars to protect its drug dealing operations.

Gee, I thought Clinton "solved" the problems in Ireland. /s

Let's hope the Queen remains safe.

Talk about deja vu all over again. Anyone have an idea why the IRA—or a faction(s) thereof—have reverted to their bomb throwing days. Assuming, of course, the story is true.

I was in Ireland in 1996. It amazed me how some of the college students I talked to had so much faith in Clinton. The admiration & hope was unbelievable.

"faith in Clinton"

Ditto for Obama maybe even much more than Clinton. Europeans have always been far more influenced by leftist politics than Americans. Despite the fact that anti free market politics made Ireland one of the poorest countries in western Europe for decades, anti-capitalism is almost reflexive over there. I have an Irish music book where the author mentions the old myth about St. Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland...wherein they crossed the Atlantic and became American businessmen. That's how nutty the leftism is over there.

By the way, Ireland remains a great place to visit, and my wife and I had a fabulous time there two years ago. But make no mistake, like other western Europeans, the Irish lean to the left.

Lovely place, isn’t it? I’m afraid my trip there was a once in a lifetime experience. Still, I’m grateful to have gone even once!

"lovely place"

Every bit as beautiful as the brochures and other literature play it up to be. Even the food was very good. Yes, Irish food. Even the pub food.

Terrorism is spreading, even the Irish are doing it now.

Irish terrorists have killed more people in this country than Al Qaeda ever will.

Yes, Billyboy sent over genius George Mitchell, the same einstein who just solved the Mideast crisis for obama.

Why would one expect college age idiots in Ireland to be any smarter than college age idiots in the US?

Yes, the IRA don’t want to be upstaged by their olde chums, the muslim terrorists in the ME.
