I bought an LED bulb that was supposed to be equal to a 40-watt incandescent. I figured I could put it in a hallway that doesn’t need much light, but needs it pretty much all day long. It wasn’t enough. It put out less light than a 9-watt incandescent night light.
So, unless they’ve stopped lying about their output, I figure that $50, “100-watt” LED might give an effective 3 watts or so. Woohoo.
So, you basically need a “lumpy linecord” or wall-wart circuit to power the LEDs — transformer, rectifier, cap, resistors, current protection (fuse, etc.). How much is your typical wall wart? $10?
Too bad they don't make an LED that will operate directly off of the line. That would get the cost down and the reliability up.
Cool idea for DC power. Wives. Lol. I certainly understand. DC makes sense when using “renewable energy” sources like wind and solar. Solar and wind are transient but could be stored in batteries/DC.
Interesting. I hadn’t heard that.
Oops, got my arithmetic upside-down. Figure 20 watts or so.
How does it compare with an incandescence bulb. If I remember correctly, they favor red. Fluorescent favors blue.
And this is supposed to tell us exactly what, except that they look bluish?
What would not look good under such a lamp? Something colored close to that central dip, like kiwi fruit?
I am one of those people. I cannot shop in a department store (or Wal-Mart) for very long, if they use LEDs.
The whites of my eyes turn red, and I get an instant headache.
This is not a brilliant move from the FEDS. The land fills are going to be full of mercury - and that will not disappear for centuries.
What ever happened to our freedom of choice?
It is now a Government MANDATED order.
And I am sick to death of the FEDS telling me how to live my life.
THEY WORK FOR ME - I PAY THEIR SALARIES - yet they issue orders to me and I must obey - or face their consequences.
(And yes - I'm stocking up on regular bulbs - big time!)
I’ve never seen any retail store that used LED lamps, especially not mass-market priced stores. Not one. Fluorescents, usually tubes, are ubiquitous in those environments.
I was an early adopter and here's what I found. Sometimes one LED goes bad and starts flickering, then you have to toss the entire bulb, also if the power electronics go bad the bulb is worthless, not talking wall-wart but the internal converter which can't be replaced. Now if a house was wired with low voltage DC and each LED was individually replaceable they might make the grade.
Hi, Hawk! I meant fluorescents. Sorry.
Well “1 watt” LEDs are typically 350mA. and 3-3.5 Volts is common. I guess the answer might have to do with whether they’re wired in series or parallel, perhaps?
3-3.5V and 1050mA, perhaps, in one configuration?
3W bulbs, 3x1W, with standard E26/27 bases, are available for $6 now, they’re wired however they’re wired and have whatever protective circuitry they have.
Oh? You plan on living more than one lifetime? :-)
Just another example of the feds overstepping their authority, they do not have the authority to tell us what type of light bulb to use. Of course this didn’t stop them from doing it.
And what are you going to do when the “incandescent light bulb” SWAT team smashes down your door to confiscate the Gaea threatening contraband, and imprison the mean possessors thereof?
I have an incandescent bulb that has been in place for 20 years. It is in my “powder” room. Works just fine. Cost me $1.50 I think (a big globe bulb). Remarkable, I remark.
Exactly, I have had many CFL's die because of circuit board failures...the tubes may be designed for 10K hours, but the circuitry isn't! My town has installed a lot of LED traffic light bulbs and I have seen many failures (partially lit, flashing on and off, etc.)...the LED's themselves may last "a lifetime", but the circuitry (AC-->DC, diodes, etc.) don't measure up.
The break even point is about a year. If you find an incandescent bulb on sale, it will only increase the break even point by maybe a month.
Perhaps we'll use them as weapons and throw them at the feds as they come through the door. Of course, we'll have the "incandescent lights" off, so they won't see us.
The rest of them will be hidden in our bunker behind the 5-gal/flush toilet.
Are they trying to protect us or provoke us? It’s UnFreakin’Real!
