I remember a prof in college saying that in the 50’s workers in a US watch manufacturing plant tipped the point of their radium dial paint brushes, used to manually paint the little dots onto the dial to mark the hours on the watch face, by touching the brush to their lips. They stopped when it became evident that the outbreak of mouth cancer was related to it.
