White House contender Huntsman: Listen to climate scientists By Ben Geman - 05/17/11 05:59 AM ET
GOP White House hopeful Jon Huntsman is sticking by his view that climate change is under way, even while reversing his past embrace of cap-and-trade.
Time magazine has posted excerpts from interviews with the former Utah governor who recently left his job as President Obamas ambassador to China conducted for a recent profile.
Asked about his views on climate change, Huntsman replied:
This is an issue that ought to be answered by the scientific community; Im not a meteorologist. All I know is 90 percent of the scientists say climate change is occurring. If 90 percent of the oncological community said something was causing cancer wed listen to them. I respect science and the professionals behind the science so I tend to think its better left to the science community though we can debate what that means for the energy and transportation sectors.
The consensus view among climate scientists is that Earth is warming and human-generated emissions from burning coal and oil and other activities are a major cause.
Huntsman embraced cap-and-trade when he was governor of Utah, signing on in 2007 to a program among Western states and Canadian provinces called the Western Climate Initiative aimed at cutting regional greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent by 2020.
The initiatives policies include a regional cap-and-trade system that is supposed to launch in 2012. But its reach is shrinking.
Arizona has abandoned participation in the cap-and-trade plan, and its under fire in other states with GOP governors, including New Mexico, where a business task force created by Gov. Susana Martinez (R) recommended last month that the state also downgrade its role to observer status.
Huntsman, for his part, is declaring the program a failure before its formal launch.
Cap-and-trade ideas arent working; it hasnt worked, and our economys in a different place than five years ago. Much of this discussion happened before the bottom fell out of the economy, and until it comes back, this isnt the moment, he said, according to Time.
Another GOP White House hopeful former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has reversed his decision to embrace cap-and-trade when he was in office.
Huntsman joins Newt and Romney as RINOs.
Any reporter that writes something like this is a complete moron and scientifically illiterate. Climate change is happening, has always happened and will always happen. The question being argued is whether we are causing it (this time) and whether we can stop it (and whether we should stop it.)
Another freak to be driven out of politics!!
Which climate scientists? The one’s that are supported by lots of govt. money or the skeptical ones?
“Who says hes a contender? Besides democrats and Big Media?”
Sean Hannity and his friend Rove? and Ted Baxter too?
Is Keyes considering another run for the presidency, EV?
I don’t know.
Seems to me there was a time when all physicians believed that you could cure disease by draining blood.
Apparantly RINOs travel in groups. How is this man a contender in anyones eyes but his own and the MSMs? Is there a Mormon politician that is NOT a socialist/leftist/RINO?
I don’t think so, but then again, very few people of any faith aren’t somehow fairly liberal.
