Report: Doctors Refusing to Treat Overweight Patients
cnsnews.com ^ | May 17, 2011 | Susan Jones

From the South Florida Sun-Sentinel: Fifteen obstetrics-gynecology practices out of 105 polled by the Sun Sentinel said they have set weight limits for new patients. Some of the doctors said the main reason was their exam tables or other equipment can't handle people over a certain weight, but at least six said heavy women run a higher risk of complications.

"People don't realize the risk we're taking by taking care of these patients," the newspaper quoted Dr. Albert Triana of South Miami as saying. "There's more risk of something going wrong and more risk of getting sued. Everything is more complicated with an obese patient in GYN surgeries and in [pregnancies]," he told the newspaper.

All of those behaviors significantly increase potential complications of pregnancy.

Yep. As does certain strenuous exercise which is supposedly a good thing.

I can see the doctor saying "I can't do the usual thus and so because of your weight and the limitations of equipment. If you want me to treat you, you must sign this waiver." Otherwise, fat people shouldn't be singled out any more than any other person who participates in some "risky" behavior.

Will these same doctors refuse to see women of normal weight who have problems carrying a baby? Doubtful.

Laziness. It's easier to go to fast food than make something healthy for the family. Momma don't miss her soaps...My son's wife is too damn lazy to get up and feed the kids a health dinner. So the kids are over weight from drive through diet.

I don't disagree. But men whose wives work need to take some of this responsibility as well. If you want the money for the fun toys, gotta share in the responsibilities at home.

If a recipient is homeless, where are they supposed to cook?

RE :”Have to wonder how some of those women got pregnant in the first place!

Not a pretty thought.

I know a Health and Fitness club that used to sponsor ‘Special Olympics’ nights for kids and the Mom's (almost no dads) mostly all pretty fat would bring the kids in and sit and talk, and eat, while someone else got their kids to exercises. I would think of these studies and wonder why they would just sit. They would use the handi-cap spots too so they didnt have to walk across a parking lot.

This is being overhyped

it sounds like a local/regional professional response to protect their medical practices from lawsuits by morbidly obese hi-risk OB patients (probably on welfare) and ambulance chasing lawyers

With food prices going the way they are, those people may not be fat for long.

Seriously though, I have been dieting since 1-26-2011 and have lost 31 pounds. Most of that time I have been on Dr. Atkins diet. I am not deprived, I’m not even hungry. I don’t take my BP meds anymore either, my BP is normal. I’ve never eaten more vegetables in my life.

This is what I eat for breakfast except for on weekends when I eat this plus 4 peices of bacon and 2 eggs:

(Place all dry ingredients in your coffee mug first)

2 really heaping tablespoons flaxseed meal
1 pkg. Stevia
1/2 tsp. baking powder (not soda!)
2 tsp. melted butter
1 egg
1/2 tsp. of cinnamon or other flavoring of your choice

Mix thouroughly, pop into your microwave for 1 minute, instant bread have ye. It’s wonderful and keeps me going til about 2 o’clock in the afternoon. Wal-mart has a wonderful cocunut oil (stays solid like lard) that I put in my coffee. I do that for 2 reasons, it is a dense food and keeps you from being hungry, and it adds the fat to your diet you need to lose weight on a low carb diet.

I could go on and on, but I’m almost convinced that the food industry is in cahoots with the medical establishment to keep from the consuming public why everyone is so dang fat, and it ain’t fat in the diet, it’s excess carbohydrates and sugar. SUGAR IS THE BANE OF MANKIND -— PERIOD!!! It should be labeled as a toxic substance.

People are just not eating food way the Good Lord built us to eat.

Homeless usually go to soup kitchens. Very few food stamp recipients are homeless.

I see food stamp recipients with shelves in their SUV’s to pack in all the food they buy.

I know a person that buys tiger shrimp and crablegs with food stamps.

Good question. There are health issues some people have based on their life styles and then there are health issues or not based on statistics. My sister-in-law had twins at 39. She was in bed or in the hospital for 7 months. Her twins were full term (40 weeks), C-section delivery, and her twins were in the hospital for 2 months after birth. I had twins at 39. Never missed a beat, worked full time, no complications, had them a month early, no c-section and they were home in less than 24 hours after birth and I was in the grocery store. My doctor was shocked at how I had no complications thorough out the pregnancy and delivery. You just never know.

Risk == Fear of ambulance chasing lawyers.

If you broke down most of the ills facing US society, you find the law profession is usually responsible.

If the gubmint really wanted to reduce obesity in food stamp recipients it would be quite easy. Quit allowing them to purchase preprepared foods and baked goods.

Pre-prepared foods in the supermarket, such as broiled chicken, cannot be paid for with food stamps. Fast food is generally not covered. TV dinners and microwaveable items, on the other hand, can be paid for with food stamps.

Exactly. There is such a hatred of fat people now, that people cannot see what happens when you demonize an entire group of people. To paraphrase the Lutheran pastor from that time period, fat people will not be the only ones who will be deemed undesirable.

They can be bought here in Indiana. Most of the folks get fat from freezer case items and baked goods, chips.

Fast food is covered here in Indiana. They even advertise it on their windows.

Liberals view the world as one of limited resources, so to make those resources last as long as possible, they have an inborn need to decide who gets access to those resources and who does not.

Every position a liberal takes is in light of this central thought.

Yes, but talk to an OB who has worked with Obese patients and the stuff that goes on is absolutely crazy. Imagine being so fat the only place they can administer medications is in your neck. That’s horribly risky and yet sometimes the OB’s are backed into making that choice.

this is a head scratcher really ???

"fat" preggos ??? really ???

yeah i know, 'morbidly obese' vs 'pregnant' is a no brainer, but some wimmin simply gain a LOT when the preggo hormones go into motion...sounds like the trend of suing OB specialists is gaining speed...

- 40% of homeless adults males are veterans, 23% of the homeless are veterans.

- 26% of the homeless population has a severe mental health disorder.

- Nationally, approximately half of all women and children experiencing homelessness are fleeing domestic violence.

- Among the Sheltered Homeless Persons in 2008, 16.8% of them were 51 and older.

- Only 37% of the homeless population receives food stamps.

- Only 33% receive Medicaid- Only 1% of homeless veterans receive veteran-related disability payments.

A recipient only receives so much per month. If they use it all on tiger shrimp and crab legs, it won’t last long.

Our economy is in very bad shape and not likely to improve any time soon. Would you let people starve? Do you complain about foreign aid, corporate aid, aid to farmers, etc.? I would rather take care of our poor than send millions to Pakistan.

RE :"yeah i know, 'morbidly obese' vs 'pregnant' is a no brainer, but some wimmin simply gain a LOT when the preggo hormones go into motion...sounds like the trend of suing OB specialists is gaining speed... "

Do those hormones get them to take this kids to the local McDonalds or Pop-eyes Chicken for dinner rather than buy real food and cooking it? No matter how fat they get, new potential fathers (for the next set of kids) seem to show up, do their work, then disappear.
